Part of me feels like Dark Souls wouldn't have caught on if the first game had difficulty settings. It'd be "cheap", "pointless", etc.
Arcade games had a relatively granular difficulty option via credit feeding and it played a big part in them written off as "button mashers"/"quarter munchers".

Also I want to make it clear that a part of this isn’t Delta being a bad game or bad remake but rather the original Snake Eater holds up so goddamn and is so impressive that even 20 years later I’m looking at it and going “how did they get so much foliage running so well on the PS2??”
Played the opening mission in the OG version of MGS 3 on PS2 and in MGS Delta and it’s almost refreshing that after years of me being nonchalant about video game remakes changing things, I finally have a game where I can be snooty and say “I think the original Snake Eater looks and plays better”

3 years ago today, Riot Games offered me a job making more money than I ever thought I’d make in my life. I had 19 interviews over 2.5 months to get it. Partner and I were moving to LA for it. I put in notice at my job and apartment.
2 weeks later they rescinded the offer due to “headcount issues”.
