the idea that the focus of play is the play in of itself and whatever story there is is formed after the fact is a kind of story i find very compelling. Now i know that wargames and baord games are better at this but i think there's fun space for it in ttrpgs

I mean more broadly taking in concepts from other ttgs, specifically board games. The fact that "mechanics as metaphor" is a concept seeming foreign to a good chunk of ttrpg authors is concerning

Saying that mechanics get in the way of the game always felt like a crutch from when someone doesn't like a game but can't explain how. And I think in ttrpgs specifically we need to start using terms from other ttgs to actually explain shit.

One thing I think gets confusing in discussions of RPG mechanics is the way people sometimes use "the mechanics get out of the way" to mean "I can ignore the mechanics"/"we didn't need to roll dice all session"
