I was thinking about that 1980s James Bond movie where everybody's trying to get their hands on a Fabergé egg for some reason

And then I realized:

It's an Egg McGuffin.

This is a good thread.

Arguably the fact I was too broke to eat well is what led to me forming tons of kidney stones and decades of pain and misery (finally stone free again).

Being poor is expensive.
On the $3/meal thing: I went through a weird period where I tried to be really frugal and would try to limit my grocery budget to $50/week. I am single and educated. It was really hard and ultimately something I gave up, because it made me miserable.

Note to self: buy a nice scarf in a couple of years.
Anyway, I’m here to remind y’all that you can be (unknowingly) hot at 21 and still be hot at 51. Just buy a scarf.

Security folklore of the morning is that no one should share URLs on Signal because it exposes IP addresses and people should use QR codes instead. Please don’t do this! QR codes are much less secure. If you’re concerned about link security, turn off link previews which you can do in Signal settings

I need people who don’t live in the Twin Cities to stop telling people not to join massive Signal groups right now. People are doing it. They’re going to keep doing it. Give them good advice about it.

The actually practical advice is don’t say anything to 1000 strangers you wouldn’t say in public

I was supposed to be in bed an hour ago but sending links and videos to people so they know to avoid the green gas (zinc chloride).

Once a lab steward, always a lab steward.

Seriously, I was a chemist twenty years ago, you do NOT want heavy metal toxicity. It fucks you up in weird ways.

Occasionally a datasheet is a LIAR and that's why we use our multimeter/etc. to find the TRUTH and today was one of those days.

Remember to double check because they may in fact get the poles numbered wrong for your thing and that will be why it won't work if you try without verifying first.

Does anyone know of a Signal 101 primer resource out there?

I don't mean ones like "here are the most secure settings", I mean like "every church lady on the block has installed this app at the same time and has no idea whatsoever how to use it, here's how to do it and what settings even are"

Friends, Claudette Colvin—the 15-year-old who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in March 1955 & joined the federal case against bus segregation that went to the Supreme Court — died today at age 86. But there are lots of myths and mis-impressions about her. A short corrective thread:

I don't usually post about these sorts of things (because I don't do them for online clout) but I have been convinced to share examples to hopefully inspire others.

Tonight my act of kindness was to build a fire for the local Sikh temple for a celebration they hosted.
