Quick reminder that Christopher Columbus was considered a vile, repulsive, evil man even in his own time. His actions as governor of Spain's New World colonies landed him in prison for his cruelty and violence.

Happy Indigenous People Day!

Did you know that Indigenous women go missing and are murdered ten times more than average? They don’t even get a quarter of the attention that a white woman going missing would get. Please keep these women in your mind. Don’t forget them

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

Boss, we’ve got a problem. Users don’t want this stuff! They keep wanting to turn it off, even when we keep turning it back on!

No money in the red kettles. Mutual aid instead.
(And no, I'm not taking questions about this.)

Salvation Army seen feeding ICE today. For anyone who doesn't already know about their bigotry, here is more, No need to give them your money this Christmas, or ever.

It’s dinner time for the police. Appears to be pizza from a Salvation Army van.

Broadview’s “free speech” curfew starts soon, at 6pm.

Remember self-care. Sprinkle some joy in with the doom scrollin' and whatnot. I love you and there's absolutely nothin' you can do about it.

This is why I left that movement and seeing people I've shared meals with saying horrible things is why I've never been tempted to go back.

I watched the split happen and walked away.

Please remember that "that's illegal" is a *description*, not a *conclusion*.

The law PROHIBITS people from doing things. It does not PREVENT people from doing things. "Illegal" does not mean "impossible." "Illegal" means "on a list of actions the government can, but is not required, to punish."

This was an amazing feat of storytelling; I love seeing how they accomplished everything they did with puppetry:

People get so weird about blocking, as though it's punishment for something. And I understand. But also:

People have the right to curate their spaces. If someone needs to NOT have me in THEIR space for their peace, good for them! I don't have the right to be in someone else's space.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I had a fantastic time volunteering. While I had thought I'd do electronics repairs & maybe a couple of knives it turned out that I was fully booked doing knife/scissor sharpening.

I am looking forward to the next event. I suggested that we host some in more economically disadvantaged neighborhoods

Volunteering at a local library for a free repair cafe run by the waste management service of Louisville; I signed up for electronics (obviously) and tossed in knife sharpening as a side repair and got fully booked for the knives.
A black folding table with sharpening stones, lubricant, a paper towel, some brushes, and various other small things

These are my Dad's old stones; unknown provenance.
