@bethmacy.bsky.social Just finished Paper Girl. Great read. It must have taken great courage to write it. You have an interesting family (to say the very least).

Senate is back in session today.

1/ So a quick 🧵on where things are at on the shutdown.

You get a lot of propaganda and spin thrown at you, so I want to give you the real, behind-the-scenes tea.

Listen to my pal @bethmacy.bsky.social brilliantly tie it all together on Fresh Air! Then check out her critical new book, Paper Girl. Not just another rant; real reporting about real people. 'Dopesick' author Beth Macy on escaping poverty -- and then going back home

Macy returned to the Ohio factory town where she grew up to find jobs have left, families are struggling and old friends now embrace conspiracy theories. Her new memoir is Paper Girl.

Through what political scientists might call a deep canvass into her own culturally polarized family in rural Ohio author Beth Macy gives us a riveting, devastating and call-to-action mirror into our nation with her extraordinary new book, “Paper Girl"

People here on Bluesky trash The Atlantic. I love that magazine. Everyday I check in to see their latest. I don't agree with every artlicle but when I read one like one by @bethmacy.bsky.social I feel I understand the world a little more.

Tl;dr: America has an acute mental health problem (see also the guy who started the LA fire) and Trump's solution to that is to invade everywhere with people who THEMSELVES appear to have stability issues.

“‘Paper Girl’ layers memoir with reporting to produce an unsettling portrait of her native Urbana, Ohio, battered all but unrecognizable by opioids and other malignant social currents.” @bethmacy.bsky.social

Thanks so much for reading and for living with these painful questions with me.

This very thoughtful and moving book excerpt in The Atlantic by a woman about the fate of her small town, her family and her life after she moved away and her continued relations w a much changed town that reflects our current dilemma. As a small town girl myself-now living in NYC-it resonates.

So grateful to @theatlantic.com for excerpting Paper Girl so beautifully yesterday.

Just came to say the same. REALLY well written/woven together look at the nuanced evolution of getting where we are.

Hell, AJC won’t even be PRINTING their paper starting 2026. And THAT is a small (but another way lost) of us even connecting with NEIGHBORS: just going to get the paper.

"Macy’s personal history provides an appealing prism" in PAPER GIRL, as she "takes on the pressing subject of the country’s political divide by returning to her hometown, Urbana, Ohio." @nytimes.com reviews PAPER GIRL.
