But I wouldn’t have dodged those bullets if I weren’t open to feedback and willing to take a few ego bruises here and there. Sadly, ego is the real mind killer when it comes to a lot of people online if they only ever want to receive an endless feedback loop of affirmation.

I have had the benefit of friends who will tell me when a take of mine is bad, probably shouldn’t share, and sometimes that’s explained to me gently or bluntly depending on the circumstances. This has saved me from looking like an dumbass (more than usual anyway)

Then again, with how much hostility they’ll react to even strangers speaking in good faith, I can only imagine “friends” are stepping around eggshells themselves. At which point you don’t have friends, just spineless yes men afraid to upset you. That’s not a good sign of your mental space either.

I look at some of these accounts who are infamous for their bad faith takes, often steeped in personal bias and solipsism, and I wonder if it’s because they get worse overtime because nobody is there to tell them they should probably delete this.

second thought: people use dunking on shit as indicators of taste but if you ask them to discuss works they love and why, you will hear a very small repeating pool because they don’t actually have taste or a grounding in the field beyond dunk material
