Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

The USA is in a constitutional crisis at the moment, which we see as a greater priority, thank you for your attention.
Honest answer, Alaska has universal basic income and one of the more expensive places to live. I believe that we need to concentrate more on getting the minimum wage raised so that corporations no longer get to starve their workers.
What would the UBI be? $1,000 a month? Not even enough to live.

UBI debates must separate gross vs net cost. In the US, a $16k adult / $8k child UBI has a $4.86T gross cost, but a $605.5B net cost after offsets. Therefor, the real cost is about one-seventh of the headline number.

Progressives HAVE been weighing in.

-universal health care
-streamlining immigration processes
-universal basic income
-more funding for childcare

But no one wanted to listen.

I am pleased to announce that I have taken Texas. It's clear those that had it couldn't run it so I will. This state will have universal basic income for everyone who makes less than $100K/yr paid for by taxing the rich & the corporations, esp oil & gas. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
I am pleased to announce that I have commandeered my neighbor's home. This home will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, to ensure it is used to benefit my neighbor and me! Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I would continue my job as I truly like it. But basic income would take a lot of stress out of handling my loans etc. I could use money more freely to fun stuff like eating in a restaurant and travelling.

Every means-tested program creates two costs:
1. Administration
2. Fraud prevention

Universal Basic Income eliminates both by design. If everyone qualifies, there’s nothing to game.

Universal Basic Income now
The world’s 500 richest people have total wealth of $11.9tn.

Their wealth up by $2.2tn in 2025. 8 billionaires accounting for a 25% of the gains.

No one becomes this rich by working.

They fund right-wing parties, oppose worker/human rights, cause more pollution than normal people.
Billionaires added record $2.2tn in wealth in 2025
Just eight billionaires accounted for a quarter of the gains, led by Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison and Larry Page

“When I was awarded this money, it was overwhelming. It is a lot of money to people like us – I felt like I’d won the lottery. I bought a phone, laptop and printer so I can do a college course. I want to do civil law so I can advocate for people who are homeless. Getting this money gives you hope.”

I would use it to ensure my family had a better, safer, and healthier lifestyle that isn't available without access to products/services that have no inexpensive option available.

Land is a commons. Every human depends on it to exist. When exclusive ownership is enforced, everyone else is implicitly paying rent just to live.

This framing is meant to provoke thought in helping the UBI community better understand the argument. UBI is justice for being denied the commons.

We should have implemented a universal basic income in 1975 and indexed it to grow as productivity grew. That was the only realistic way of ensuring that productivity growth benefited all of us. To this day, UBI remains the most important thing to start to make sure we *ALL* benefit from GDP growth.
Since 1975, $79 trillion in wealth has been redistributed from the bottom 90% to the top 1% — a 1% that now owns more wealth than the bottom 93%.

We can respect innovation & entrepreneurship, but we cannot respect the extraordinary greed that now exists.

We need a wealth tax.

People ask, “How do we fund UBI?”

That’s skipping the first question:
how did a few people get so rich in the first place?

The answer isn’t just hard work.
It’s control of land, resources, and systems everyone depends on

UBI is the share everyone gets when access is taken away
It has to be paid for somehow. The ideal to me is a wealth transfer from the uber rich to everyone else.

You can talk about rights all day, but the money has to come from somewhere.

What’s your take on private property land owners paying us all rent?
Enclosing the commons removed access to shelter and subsistence, forcing labor by exclusion

Rent on private property, once understood, is the logical outcome and is returned to all as a social dividend #UBI

This fulfills Lockean compensation for the loss of the commons

Basic Income in Canada is closer than you think

Basic Income isn’t a utopian dream. It is a real policy initiative that is working its way through Parliament right now.

wish they would just say UBI and universal healthcare “won’t work” bc keeping people sick and stressed and scared is the only thing allowing me personally to rob them blind
I wish they would just come out and say "it won't work because if people don't have that sword hanging over their head they won't feel as compelled to accept shitty pay, and also I want to make money off of it" because those are the actual reasons

And the same is true for universal basic income. The entire economy is oriented around the default setting of desperation to survive amidst maldistributed abundance.
Almost every argument against universal health care is just a guy who makes 200k a year sending emails saying "but the flea and tick lobby will be really upset if we give the dog a bath"

Do what my purpose in life is and always been: create. Music, art, poetry, travel and make art and photos and poems about it. Return to the semi-Nomadland life I lived for awhile, and got so much material to create about. Write. Share it. Teach it. Live it.

Depends on how much we're talking about. If it just replaced my pension, I would still be hanging on by my fingertips.

An extra thousand per month? I might become a digital nomad, make travelogues for places further and further away.

Or build the house Sara & I dreamed of.

Baseline: cover utilities (water/electricity/internet/etc.) and food.

Remainder? Reinvest it in expanding what I can do and create.
I can put some cash aside over time to finish the basement and turn it into a workshop, meaning I'd be able to make physical goods to sell.

I genuinely don’t know what I would do with myself. Might keep teaching, might go full time research (or take leave to finish my degree). Go to way more conferences.

But first pay off debt.
