it occurs to me that the actual play area of Elevator Action is basically modern widescreen, but it avoids the usual pacing problems that come with that aspect ratio in 2D games because you need to progress up and down, really simple solution to a problem that didn't even exist yet

I wrote this joke article about Ian Bogost's idiotic takes on game narrative *eight years ago*, there's absolutely no point in relitigating this nonsense. He's just a stupid old man playing the same stupid old song.

listen. i love myself some mechanics. I read kingdom of loathing's monthly updates and i don't even play the game.

but this is like saying the interesting thing about movies is whether there is a dolly zoom or not.
The interesting, sophisticated thing about games is not whether they can tell stories as well as books or movies (they can’t) or float shocking themes as well as fine art (honestly, who cares).

It’s the manipulation of systems, the play of contingency, the brokenness of machines.

every single goddamn time i see somebody mention N. K. Jemisin i think about her criticizing the story and then tweeting “well I didn’t read it but”
I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter wasn't actually that intense. A lot of the "queer community" pilloried a trans woman and ran her out of society entirely and buried her literary future because they felt like it and they could taste blood in the water, and that's how all this works.

Fascinating look at how much one band—Los Campesinos!—makes from streaming.

“If everyone who streamed All Hell on Spotify had done so using Tidal instead, we would have received an extra £31,847.38, which would double the amount we made from streaming of the album in this time period.”

A thing I wish critics would interrogate more: does a game really fail to meet modern *standards*, or does it just not conform to contemporary *trends*? Sometimes design ideas are left behind for good reason, but not always. Is it automatically bad if a game feels like it belongs in a different era?

If you're trying to ditch NYT Games, which you should be since their games singlehandedly prop up the entire dogshit rag financially, you should switch to Puzzmo. An annual sub is 50% off today for a crazy $19 and as a bonus doesn't enable the genocides of Palestinians and trans people
Puzzmo — The (new) place for thoughtful puzzles.
Re-imagined mainstays like the daily Crossword Puzzle, modern classics like Really Bad Chess and SpellTower, and even a few brand new puzzles.

Just to have it on record, we had already been working on a 3D Metroidvania where you can use a motorcycle to travel quickly from one biome to another for… 3 or 4 years at this point? haha

(Hopefully we won't take as long as that other 3D Metroidvania with a bike... which I can't wait to play!)

This. But also, remember that passion alone doesn't pay the bills. Most indies underprice their games, are ignored by algorithms, undersold, some even unfairly blocked from selling... So check that your money actually moves in the direction you want people surviving and making things.

There is a vibrant industry of people selling fixes to inadequacies in the Unity editor on the Unity store, and since Unity gets a cut on those but their editor is free they'd be actively depriving themselves of revenue by fixing it themselves
