Every topic in the horoscope deserves this type of historical deep dive. How did pre-modern people understand topics like family, labor, sustenance, relationships, eminence, and selfhood? How were these understandings mirrored in their astrology? How do we carry them into modernity?

People want to deviate from these rigid, colonial definitions of the world as perceived and discussed through astrology, but instead of engaging with the roots of this lineage and exploring other cultures and time periods, they want to stay within that lens and still claim they’re innovating.

Is there eminence to be gained through one’s career? Are their honors to be found in your 9-5? Absolutely! So that’s not to say that these interpretations never work or don’t help people, rather, their scope is incredibly limited. They can’t speak to experiences outside of the capitalist lens.

“Career astrology” is such a good example of this. The Sun and the 10H (among other signifiers) deal with reputation, honors, and eminence. This all gets flattened and decontextualized as being “career” though, which is not what was intended or how the techniques surrounding that notion were applied

I feel like this is where a lot of contemporary astro content continues to fall flat. Terms like “religion” or “labor” or “wealth” aren’t understood with their original nuances, they’re decontextualized and expanded on in a way that isn’t logically consistent.

Two things that this “Astrology of Religions” lecture demonstrates are (1) the richness of the pre-modern scholars’ understand of their own lived experience and (2) the extent to which they integrated these understandings into their astrology.

BlueSky only works for me because I’ve divested from engaging with social media as a creator and treat it more like my personal IG: Interact with the same 20-30 people, never touch the discover tab, and be VERY liberal with the mute/block button lol.

Agreed. BlueSky has better controls than a lot of these other platforms, but those controls don’t mitigate the issues that exist across all platforms. If anything, they inadvertently create new ones.

No one’s reinventing the wheel as much as they’re recreating it with respect to the climate and culture of their region. There’s a difference between the Chesapeake wheel, the Jamaican wheel, the Brazilian wheel, and the Andalusian wheel, but they’re all still wheels.

It’s fascinating to see how the occult sciences of the medieval period were inherited by different cultures around the world. The same concept will have multiple faces in multiple different regions, and yet, it still remains coherent across all of them. Alhamdulillah.
