Brighton / English Channel

Final image (B&W that is) from @thedailyholga's #holgaweek walk in Brighton.

#believeinfilm
Black and white, grainy photograph of a rough sea under a cloudy sky. The ocean fills the middle ground, with white waves cresting and rolling towards the shore. The foreground is a dark, rocky or pebbled beach. A bright horizon line separates the dark water from the dramatic, heavily clouded sky.

Awesome. Thanks, seems a great reason for another stay over at the White Hart 👌

Wider view of statue of St Michael (Harry Phillips)
St Michael in Lewes church, Lewes

#holgaweek #believeinfilm
An antique, square-format, black and white photograph captures a small, metal relief sculpture of an angel mounted on a textured stone wall, likely a cemetery gatepost or a church tower. The angel, possibly Saint Michael the Archangel, is depicted in a triumphant pose, slaying a dragon or demon below his feet.

Above the sculpture, a decorative, wrought-iron arch or gatework frames the angel, with intricate scrollwork and pointed Gothic elements that draw the eye toward the central figure. The low-angle perspective emphasizes the height of the post and the dramatic nature of the scene, creating a sense of scale and shadow.

Even more so for bleeding edge GPU's which go out of date faster than egg sandwiches.

More history from Lewes...

Thomas Paine's house

#holgaweek #believeinfilm
A grainy, slightly overexposed black and white photograph of an old house with a large bay window on the upper floor. A dark plaque or sign below the window reads: "1768-1774. IN THIS HOUSE, LIVED THOMAS PAINE, WRITER AND". The rest of the text is obscured. There's a dark front door and two smaller windows below the sign. The image has a soft, historical feel due to the film-like quality and bright lens flare on the left.

Keere Street, Lewes

Lewes is a beautiful historic town in East Sussex not far from Brighton. The White Hart Inn is a fabulous overnight stay and there is plenty to explore and photograph.

#holgaweek #believeinfilm
A low-angle, black and white photograph of a cobbled street leading uphill, called Keere Street. In the foreground, a dark metal sign post holds a rectangular sign with white lettering. The sign reads: "KEERE STREET NO THROUGH ROAD" and provides a historical note: "Although recorded in history that George, when Prince Regent, drove a coach and four down Keere Street for a wager, access by vehicles to and from the High Street is now forbidden. BY ORDER LEWES DISTRICT COUNCIL." The street is lined with historic brick and painted houses. Trees overhang the left side, and a strong shadow of the signpost falls on the cobblestones.

More than just a bad apple: why we must look closer at the Nathan Gill scandal

New evidence connects the Ukrainian politician who paid bribes to Gill - Reform UK’s former leader in Wales - to a campaign to destabilise the US election

@carolecadwalla.bsky.social reports
The contact of Reform UK's Russian puppet Nathan Gill is linked to efforts to destabilise the US and Ukraine. Why, even now, is no one asking questions?

Brighton promenade

Enjoyed my first visit to Brighton. I hadn't quite expected the scale of it. Will have to return.

#holgaweek #believeinfilm
A grainy, high-contrast, black and white photo taken from inside a dilapidated seaside shelter. The perspective looks out through grimy window panes and vertical metal supports to the promenade, which has a railing and several empty benches. Beyond the benches, the sea stretches toward the horizon under a bright, cloudy sky. In the foreground, the wooden slats of a bench inside the shelter are visible, along with a faded mural or etching on the wall to the lower left, possibly of a sailboat. The image has a vignette effect and a vintage, melancholy feel.

Statue of St Michael (Harry Phillips)
St Michael in Lewes church, Lewes

#holgaweek #believeinfilm
A dramatic, low-angle, black-and-white photograph shows a sculpture of a winged figure—possibly an angel or a classical hero—clinging to the rough, vertical surface of a tall, cylindrical stone tower.

The figure is dynamic, suspended in a mid-air pose, arms outstretched with large wings spread behind it. It wears a helmet or hat and a short, pleated skirt. The camera angle looks sharply upward, making the tower appear massive and the sky bright and distant. The graininess and high contrast of the photo enhance the texture of the stone and the sense of drama.

A black and white photograph of a girl paddling in a lake - she is looking down at the water. She is wearing a summer dress & the light shines on her hair and water.

More from #holgaweek. This time the delightfully English county town of Lewes. Enclosed bowls green on the top of a hill with a white washed club house and a castle in the background. Anyone for cucumber sandwiches and a pot of tea?

#believeinfilm
A grainy, high-contrast, black and white photograph, likely taken with a pinhole or toy camera, shows a low, wide stone wall heavily textured with moss in the foreground. The wall is out of focus, emphasizing its rugged surface. In the middle ground, a small, white wooden building, possibly a cricket pavilion or park shelter, stands behind the wall, surrounded by dense trees and shrubs. Looming in the background on a hill is a partial view of a large, stone castle or fortified building, its tower silhouetted against a bright, cloudy sky. The deep depth of field gives the image a distinctive, slightly distorted aesthetic.
