If you're new here, I will never accept that settler colonial nations have any right to exist. Decolonization means Indigenous land and life-ways back, no cops, no landlords, and probably other stuff that might twist up your ginch so beware.

For two years, a Sudanese paramilitary force has been massacring civilians—with Canadian-made weapons.

The absolutely awesome Canadian author, Robert J. Sawyer has written quite a few Indigenous characters into his books. He has even waxed philosophical about Indigenous relationships to land without ever needing to present himself as Indigenous. (apihtawikosisan.com/2012/01/ques...)
Questioning assumptions, Sawyer did it, will you?
I’ve been reading a lot of Robert J. Sawyer lately, because as pointed out by Adam Shaftoe and Matt Moore in the fall 2011 On Spec, he’s a Canadian Sci-Fi author who is surprisingly opt…

Sure hoping I get that grant I applied for because I have one month of savings left to cover December and after that I may be hooped!

Still not going to go back to academia though. I'll happily get a mall job.

Alt text description.

Meme: Dude in front of a laptop looking up with a thoughtful expression as part of a Wiki How article. The topic is writing, and careers in writing. Text is "How to Succeed as a Writer" and the first point is "Pretend to be Indigenous."

I love my publishers and publishers in general but their careful and organized schedules (which are absolutely necessary for publishing success) can be such a bummer when you, the writer, just want to squeal and be excited lol.

Just want to point out that "Indigenous Writes: A Guide to First Nations, Métis & Inuit Issues in Canada" has a new edition coming out in the spring of 2026 with a much expanded exploration of administrative definitions of Indigenous folks (and more).

Fuuuucking this (re: Thomas King's book being cited in a SCC decision):

"But when a Pretendian (unwitting or not) is influencing Supreme Court decisions about Indigenous Peoples, it must be called out and stopped.”
I’ve got an article out in the Star today about the Thomas King issue:
Thomas King’s admission he isn’t Indigenous is just the first step. This is what has to happen next

Ethnic frauds stir up so many terrible feelings in Indigenous folks, and I don't think the general public really understands this.

The goal of the ongoing colonial project has been the erasure of Indigenous Peoples, meaning our identity and existence has been undermined from every direction.

Wait until you find out about some of the "Indigenous" authors you replace Thomas King with.

It just doesn't end.

One more thing. For YEARS I (and others) thought King was Blackfoot because of Green Grass, Running Water and his other writings around that time. And he was so heavily embedded in Treaty 7 at that time. I don't know if I missed it or he wasn't saying at the time that he claimed Cherokee.

The real problem with pretendians is the way discussions around them are driven by mainstream colonial narratives about Indigeneity. Non-indigenous folks believe themselves experts on Indigenous identity and end up muddying the waters even more.

Seeing this discussed by non-Indigenous folks is...
