As an environmental scientist by training, I'm used to the privilege of doing field work in beautiful locations, but this stark location (a slum in the greenhouses in Almería) was beautiful because of the amazing people who participated in our study

"CASI workplace harassment"

As many as 120,000 migrants maintain the 32,000ha of plastic greenhouses in Almería - the source of much of Europe's winter fruit and veg - many undocumented and working in dangerous conditions for low pay.

🚨 Spain is building an open-air prison for migrant workers.

Los Grillos, a new housing project in Almería, was meant to replace informal settlements. Instead, it has fences, security cameras, and a curfew.

A thread on Europe’s hidden exploitation. 🧵👇

This worrying trend to erase their existence demonstrates the lack of sustainability of the country's approach to lucrative intensive greenhouse production.

Read about the eviction and why this exploitation can't carry on in my new article in UnTold Magazine: untoldmag.org/photo-story-...

Just published in The New Climate: Will New Laws Help to ‘Green’ Almería’s Sea of Plastic?

Almería’s greenhouses look dazzling from above — but underneath lies a system struggling with plastic, waste & fragile regulations.

🚨 NEW: Climate change is already causing 30,000 deaths per year - a global annual economic loss of $100-350B USD - but the true damage is probably 10x higher. Out TODAY in Nature Climate Change: the first systematic look at the science of "health impact attribution" 🔓 www.nature.com/articles/s41...
"Health losses attributed to anthropogenic climate change," a brief communication in the journal Nature Climate Change. There's a map showing regions of the world, and pie charts of relevant studies as they apply to different health impacts like "heat-related deaths" and "maternal and child health"
