My name is Anthony.

I am usually located in London UK, but mostly staying home since 2020; except for occasional visits to Cape Town, South Africa; Boston, Massachusetts and other places.

Cynic, grey in the beard. Tries to cook, and ties to fix things. Happily married. He / Him.

YouTube's algorithm recommended me James Hoffman videos. He's an expert in the classic British way being both hugely knowledgeable and mildly quirky. I'm not a big coffee drinker though, so my main takeaway has been to incorporate pour over techniques into making Pot Noodles.

I encounter this constantly in software writing too. People bitch: why didn't you cite x old book? Because. It was bad. And I disagree with it. Because I have a threshold for quality, sorry!

Incredible how many people are like: the devastatingly horrific thing about AI is that the way it talks to you is bad for your mental health. I will now scream at a real person via social media and dehumanize them with insults!
Your "kittens" look increasingly like cats.

this is my basic thesis of how the AI bubble works. it doesn't work on market forces at all or it'd be dead already. it's an industry-wide Enron scam. they will all put in whatever money is needed to keep it afloat as absolutely long as possible.

(hence me picking 2027-ish for the final collapse)
betting against any of this is the same as betting against crypto. at a certain point the money needs the money to keep being money so it props the money up so that the money stays moneyed. us peons note the nudity of said money but they don't care, because this all keeps them in yachts.

And with the washing? The money doesn't exist. At all.
Look closely at all of these 'deals,' and what you'll actually see is X "promises" to pay Y for "thing." But Y can't deliver "thing" so X isn't paying with cash it doesn't have based on revenue that doesn't exist.

Researchers claiming LLMs refusing to shut down when instructed is evidence that they have a "survival instinct" perhaps didn't consider the possibility that LLMs have no way of shutting themselves down, but they do have dystopian science fiction in their training data that might match that input.

Also, London is not in many ways an English city nor has it been. It was a global port and global city - arguably way back to the Roman. It has a long history of being more connected to places offshore than to distant parts of the realm. Its scale and character make it hard to grasp.

Get over to Reddit and post the issues you need fixed! Upvote the other comments. While we’ve had some great responses, I was expecting more feedback. You’ve got until the end of Wednesday!
What should Rider 2026.1 fix? I'm asking for a bit of community upvoting to know what issues you're most eager to get in to Rider 2026.1, which we're in the process of planning. How else were you planning on spending a wet Friday afternoon?

I cannot tell you how many tech journalists at prominent media organizations do not understand this
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

If it “drives you mad” when you see black or Asian people then you are a racist. That’s not semantics. That’s literally the definition of a racist. That’s what racist means.

The implication of a lot of Trump admin action is that the US can never be good at green tech so it has to lock the world into its rent driven fossil resource economy. A really bleak view of American potential.
Trump has never been supportive of green technologies, but in his second term he has made a concerted effort to wreck climate policies. The world now has a carbon bully, as one expert put it.

How Trump Pressures the World Into Burning More Oil and Gas
As COP30 nears, the US’s pressure to keep fossil fuels relevant may empower petrostates, potentially giving them more leverage at the UN talks.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

Still not sure why @quietriotpod.bsky.social from yesterday only shows up as a new release on PocketCasts after 10am today though?
