Silk Spencer, Met’s date is 1804–1814, probably British. Click through to see details of all those tassels, which would have given the garment a wonderful sense of movement when worn. #DressHistory

They have a shoe on display that is said to have been Catharine Van Rensselaer Schuyler's wedding slipper ... I would date it later (1775-1785) and suggest it belonged to a daughter's wedding or was worn later in her life. 🗃️🪡

Is it cake? Or is it an actual dress? The mid #1770s bringing confection to fashion with candy pinks, powder blues and minty greens. It even has little net bells tinkling around the hem, LACMA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

The Marble Hall (Marmorsaal) of the Neues Palais in Potsdam exemplifies royal opulence and Baroque artistry. Situated above the Grotto Hall, this grand ballroom and banqueting hall stretches across two stories, featuring walls and flooring crafted from exquisite marble. The hall is illuminated by splendid crystal chandeliers and crowned by an immense, gilded curved ceiling. Its centerpiece is a vast mythological ceiling painting by Charles-Amédée-Philippe van Loo, the largest canvas work of its kind north of the Alps. The room is further adorned with colossal paintings and statues of historic rulers, all testifying to the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of 18th-century Prussian court culture. The Marble Hall remains one of the finest representations of palace architecture and decorative arts in Europe.

The original chandelier and ghost story of The Phantom of the Opera (see ALT) makes Palais Garnier a strong candidate for #PalacesandGardens #MythsandLegends
#AlphabetChallenge #WeekOforOpulent
Photo is of gilded chandeliers and columns in an ornate room with vaulted, painted ceilings. Some people stand in the center, staring or taking photos.

The original novel of The Phantom of the Opera was born from a real life tragedy of a fire causing the counterweight of a chandelier to fall, injuring several and actually killing someone. There were also rumors that at least one ghost haunted the Palais. And that a faceless man lived in the lake under the Opera. The French author, Gaston Leroux, used the real life events and legends surrounding the place to inspire his novel.

A crisp autumn sunrise bathes the Neues Palais in Potsdam in gentle golden light, casting long shadows across the elaborate rooftop balustrade. The statues stand silhouetted against a dramatic sky streaked with warm amber and soft grey, their forms outlined sharply amidst the glow of morning. Contrasting hues and delicate cloud patterns create a tranquil, almost ethereal atmosphere as the first light touches the historic facade, blending architectural grandeur with the soft promise of a new day.
