It was such a gift to be with students, faculty, and community members at Elon for the last few days. Dr. Maria Mejia and others across multiple departments and programs (Philosophy, Religion, History, English, more) are cultivating community-engaged scholarly + abolitionist community. More of this!
Last night, Elon’s Philosophy Department held its annual Reynolds lecture. Andrew Krinks spoke about the connections between religion, capitalism, and a carceral culture to a room packed with students, faculty, and community members. #ElonFaculty #ElonUniversity

"White Property, Black Trespass is more than an analysis of religion, racial capitalism, and the carceral state; it is also a tool for abolitionist scholars seeking to challenge the presumption that society 'needs' prisons and police."

Gratitude, always, when folks take the time to engage the book!

This is a wonderful and right-on-time conversation. I especially loved the recognition that fear clarifies what we value that we don't want taken away, and the invitation to connect with our fear, without shame, to let it show us what we love, and then to "think about possibility from that space."
Aaron Goggans and I talk about what happens when movements start running on empty—how trauma, burnout, and dysregulation can shape our organizing, and what it takes to sustain ourselves and each other in a moment of crisis and emergency. I found this conversation so helpful, and I hope you will too.
Burnout Is Not Inevitable: Building Movements That Can Hold Us
“Care really should be at the center of our strategy, of our analysis, and of our practice,” says Aaron Goggans.

Nothing we do is sufficient, and everything we do matters.
We must be strategic, and we must operate on multiple fronts simultaneously.
Time is of the essence, and we have to act for the long haul.
This is how change happens." Dan Berger

I'll be in North Carolina on Nov 12 to talk about criminalization, abolition, and political spirituality.

The talk will move somewhere between the book I already wrote (on the religious function of criminalization) and the one I'm trying to write next (on political spirituality and abolition).

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.

“Fuck them kids.”

That’s literally what an ICE agent said when ICE, the FBI et al. raided an apartment in Chicago, including with a Blackhawk helicopter, separated children from their parents, and zip-tied them to each other.

I've been trying—slowly, for months—to write something on what I'm calling 'holy racial class war', the long trajectory that creates the conditions for the present...to try to help us interpret it all. But the manifestations of it won't stop reproducing daily. Chill out for 1 min plz! Too much!!

To June Jordan, Toni Morrison said, “You know there's always been a fascist strain, here: It's not even political in the sense of this party or that. It's like a virus that can attach itself to Democrats or Republicans… And we know it's around. We can tell because black people are the nexus.”

Christian martyrs are killed for their faith and/or while testifying about their faith. We can look to the words on his lips during that event + the many that preceded it to discern the contents of the "faith" he proclaimed. From that, we learn about the "faith" of those celebrating him as martyr.
Following a special video tribute for Kirk produced by TPUSA, Jackson addressed the crowd: "Charlie Kirk is a Christian martyr in America in 2025. That is not an easy sentence... It’s one that will not be heralded in a lot of places, but I believe it’s the most accurate..."

It's very bad but it isn't eternal. And the way to make it not eternal is to take action where you can with the people also taking action around you, or starting action and inviting people to join you. Even just relationship-building and saving numbers with neighbors—critical for today + beyond.
The Third Reich didn't last 1,000 years.

Pinochet was ousted with a referendum.

And the US isn't exactly dealing with the smartest, most competent fascists.

Those of you insisting that 2025 is forever need to read a book, touch grass, go to therapy, anything other than trying to make others quit.

This is such an important interview about an important front line in the fight against fascist and authoritarian consolidation.

"By every moral or ethical standard it is the duty of soldiers to refuse orders to “defend” the US from migrants. History will look kindly upon those who do."
For my latest, I talked with counter-recruiter Rory Fanning about how we should communicate with National Guard troops deployed in US cities, and how we might counter ICE's current recruiting blitz.
