Funny how often people talk about rich fools trying to avoid societal collapse in isolated bunkers as if it's a new phenomenon and not something Edgar Allan Poe wrote a very famous story about in 1842.

The Internet Archive/YT has the extant eps of Wyllis Cooper's unique late 40s series. Sound quality can be iffy but ck out: The Smell of High Wines, Camera Obscura, Some People Don't Die, My Son John, Rain on New Year's and of course The Thing on the Fourble Board. (1)

Why are we always "descending" into madness? I like to think I ascend an elaborate spiral staircase into madness.

I think what's impressive about TRON is that, visually, it's still so much more interesting than any of it's sequels. It's crazy that they tried update this digital world by making it as 'realistically rendered' as possible. It's a complete misunderstanding of the original's charm.

honestly if modern filmmakers really wanted to recapture this kind of spirit they'd be hiring webcomic artists with cult followings for concept design

Speaking of secret sauce that wasn't anywhere to be found in the sequels, so much of the idiosyncrasies of the original film that make it timeless come from visionary artist Jean Giraud AKA Moebius.

The experience of realizing you procrastinated too much and you gotta pull an all-nighter to finish writing something and then you look back, strung-out and half-alive, and LIKE what you wrote, and could only imagine how good you could be if you were kinder to yourself

...that's the important stuff

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.
