Toen ik mijn eerste colleges ging geven, wilde ik een strenge docent zijn. Een waarvoor de studenten een klein beetje bang zouden zijn.

Some people confuse correlation and causation, some people confuse causation and “deterministic direct 1:1 causation” 🥲

Like the “uneducated” explanation, the “religious” one depends on a confusion between correlation and causation. Even if all women today with large families are religious, not all women who are religious have large families. Religion is correlated with total fertility, but not obviously causal.12 That is, something else mediates the association between religion and fertility. We don’t know what that is.

ik las vorige week een voorwoord. Het leek me erg LLM, maar dan realiseerde ik me dat het geschreven was in 2015. Generische BS en nodeloze herhalingen zijn van alle tijden, zoals LinkedIn al tachtig jaar aantoont.

On both the right and left, reactions to technology end up having way too much to do with tribalism or broader ideological positions than the actual realities of those technologies. GMO and pharma are other great examples where people conflate failures of capitalism with issues with the tech itself

juist, maar in de geesteswetenschappen draait heel veel om schrijven, wat een extra probleem stelt. Voor een mastervak produceer ik nu zelf korte papers met Gemini en ChatGPT en laat ik hen die verbeteren. Ik vermoed dat dit redelijk zou kunnen aansluiten bij hun toekomstig werk.

geen probleem hoor en terecht dat je scherp bent. Maar ik weet echt ook niet wat we ermee aan moeten. Het schrijven van de toekomst zal m.i. een schrijven met GenAI zijn, dus ik heb geopteerd voor een tweesporenaanpak, waarbij ze zowel met als zonder LLMs moeten schrijven. Maar het blijft een gok.

de meeste opleidingen zijn er al even mee bezig, maar de breuk met het verleden is zo enorm, dat we niet altijd weten wat nog zinvol is. Wat ook niet helpt, is dat sommige collega's geen flauw benul hebben van de kracht van de LLM's, waardoor ze naïef met dezelfde opdrachten blijven werken.
