📌🧵 to have them all in one place, here's a little thread of some publishing-related resources that I've created or contributed to.

First up, a doc of resources for folks early in or aspiring to a publishing career (but books & links may be interesting to/helpful for those further along, too!)

2021; still eminently quotable:

"With more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions and fewer than 130 university presses in the United States and Canada, this vital infrastructure of knowledge and career advancement is directly supported by less than 3 percent of the institutions it benefits."

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

in college one of my classes had as a weekly assignment to read the New Yorker cover to cover. I couldn't keep up with a weekly mag now, but I like the idea of returning to a regimen of reading an entire issue of something in print, including all the stories I wouldn't pick to read individually

the nice thing about projects like this is that I feel like I am making a tangible difference that will help the author. editing is so often subjective, which means I'm often second-guessing myself, but it's hard to argue with word counts

This is of niche industry interest, but here goes:

The digital catalog platform most independent bookstores use to peruse and order new books for their stores (called Edelweiss) has jacked up their prices on publishers to catalog new titles 200-300%.

Why does this matter?

I'm editing a manuscript that needs to be cut down quite a bit. it's kind of overwhelming to try to wrap my head around what needs to be done, but I've made a little spreadsheet to break it down by chapter and track my progress, and it's surprisingly encouraging to have while I work
a spreadsheet. column A lists Prologue, Intro, Chapters 1-6, and Epilogue. Column B, headed "total," lists each chapter's original word count (mostly in the 20 thousands), and at the bottom, in bold, the total word count. Column C, headed "current total," lists updated word counts for the intro and chapter 1, and the updated total word count in bold at the bottom. Column D, headed "change," lists the difference between the original and updated word counts for edited chapters. These differences are automatically calculated. The updated total word count is also automatically calculated, using the formula that appears in the formula bar.

I don't want an obsequious chatbot, I just want:
a) to be able to attach comments to endnotes/footnotes
b) to be able to convert PDFs with endnotes/footnotes to a Word doc
