When we say that many Americans have a 6th grade reading level this is what that means. At a 6th grade level you can read most texts and absorb their surface level meaning, but it’s not until an 8th grade level where you grasp things like subtext, metaphor, and ulterior motives.
atticusgf.bsky.social
A huge amount of critics cannot engage with writing more complex than YA Lit, do not even understand the meaning of subtext, and are unable to comprehend that there can be main characters that are intentionally unrelatable, unappealing, and morally bad.
dominictarason.com
It's amazing how many critics just turned their ENTIRE brains off when faced with that game.

"The devs gave Keanu a big role so we're meant to be empathizing with this Johnny character"

No, the game is wildly unsubtle about Johnny being a narcissistic idiot who wants to fix capitalism with nukes.

That’s definitely true, but I also think many of these parties would side with non white Christian’s or Jews over Muslims. Part of it is worshipping whiteness, part of it is specifically hating Islam.

I've never really gotten a satisfactory answer on this beyond the fact that Western establishmentsrian left liberals, especially in the Anglosophere and Germany, just simply identify with Israel on an ideological level.

Yeah I think it is abundantly clear that Israeli politicians, and not just limited to Netanyahu but even up to Lapid, have a preference for right wing blocs in other countries. The puzzling part is that liberals and left wingers across the board in N America and Western Europe have no response

I think you can look at alot of what the administration is doing as a direct response to the relative popularity of the BLM protests in 2020. They believe that the public was wrong to have supported the protests and so the administration wants to prove that they were right all along.

this is not true? the public was broadly supportive of the BLM protests bsky.app/profile/cycl...
cyclesixmile.bsky.social
I tend to agree but also during protests in 2020 there were many videos of police brutalizing people and some of the general public actually thought that was a good thing and wanted to see the police do more brutalizing. Hopefully that was just a fringe.

one response to this (correct) observation is to say “well, the cops will attack you no matter how you dress and behave.” that’s right. images of cops and ICE beating grandmas and kids in inflatable frog costumes is a win for the opposition.
sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com
one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

MAGA Rage at “No Kings” Boils Over—and It Quickly Backfires on Trump
As Trump allies smear the coming protests, a good writer on MAGA skewers the absurdity of these attacks on large swaths of Americans—and explains why our best recourse will be to turn out in force.

the broad public does not like chaos and disorder and everything you can do to emphasize that it is the federal government that is responsible for chaos and disorder is a point in your favor. it’s classic nonviolent confrontation!

I had just started reading this over the weekend...

“…you can't throw anybody under the bus. You can't leave anybody behind. And that's become my favorite thing to say to people: I won't throw anybody under the bus, and I'm not leaving anybody. It has to include us all, or it's not going to work.”

Reading Miss Majors Speaks was an incredibly moving experience last year. I can't recommend this book enough for those unfamiliar with her work.

At Twitter's peak you could post a question and have 18 replies within an hour: 5 automated garbage, 4 bad jokes, 6 confidently wrong, 1 from someone with a PhD on the topic, a set of serial replies from someone with a hyperfixation that provides more useful info than the PhD, and a death threat

What’s especially wild (legally) about this is that NSBP, NSHP, and SACNAS have always welcomed people of all backgrounds, including white people. NSHP has had a white president, my SACNAS leadership institute class has several white members, and NSBP has a sizable white membership.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

She stepped into a tough situation and handled it as well as she could, I guess my question here is whether that actually signals that she might do well in 28’ or not.

Basically I think the 24’ race was so weird it didn’t really give us useful evidence as to how she’d do in another election.
anarcish.bsky.social
That’s probably true if we compare her run to a continuation of the Biden campaign, but we have no idea how things would have gone with a different candidate.

She was the clear choice because she was VP, not because of her political acumen in particular. We really don’t have many answers here.

Do you notice how the state basically cannot function any longer without using constant screaming all-channels terror and moral panics to force through deeply unpopular and immoral policies
flyingrodent.bsky.social
The government continuing to incite fear and hatred against members of the public here, hand in hand with our horrible, poisonous media outlets, both to evade responsibility for their own conduct and to fill space that might otherwise be stories about how unpopular they are and how much they suck.

Kind of wild how much Biden himself chose to torpedo the impossible legacy he had always wanted and almost obtained

They do not fall for anything that isnt pro Trump. Theyre not just gullible in the abstract, a lot of them are actually much smarter than that. The real problem is that they are biased

They see something fake and pro Trump and they justify it, they see something real and against him and debunk it
anarcish.bsky.social
He also implied he was at least considering not running again on the 2020 campaign trail. He would certainly have a much better legacy now if he had been that bridge president that righted the ship and then passed the torch.

Now I have a hard time thinking he isn’t the one who blew it for everyone.

My mom, sister, and I went to the last no kings march. She actually started my protesting career by taking me to an anti Iraq war rally way back in the day, and she went to occupy in 2011.

I don’t think she wants to stare down riot cops with me but theres more than one kind of protest for a reason.

A lot of this game theory ignores primaries. A reasonable republican can’t get the nomination for the same reason a democrat who ran on anti trans issues couldn’t.

You have to win over your own partisan base in the primary before you can even try and contest the moderates in the general election.
anarcish.bsky.social
I think this is the most outlandish scenario.

The republicans base was more pro Trump than ever, that only started to change after he got into office and started ripping the wires out of the walls. No appeal to R’s or left likening sing voters.

That candidate would have put up Marco Rubio numbers.
anarcish.bsky.social
She’s clearly way better at campaigning now than she was in 2020, but with no primary and an unprecedented scenario with Biden dropping out so close to the election I don’t feel like I have any idea how she would do in a normal election.

I guess if she runs again 2028 is going to be the real test.
