I’m just doing my #ConfictOfInterest training as a commissioner for Brookline Commission of the Arts & OMG 5 minutes in and I’m already appalled by how blatantly so many of our politicians are flouting them. I mean I knew it but this is really bringing it home to me

For some reason, FIFA has invented its own peace prize, which will be awarded next month.

That was some of what you could learn from Grokipedia, the Al-powered encyclopedia launched last week by the world's richest person, Elon Musk. The problem was, as Prof Evans discovered when he logged on to check his own entry, all these facts were false.

Picture of a journal article: Racket sociality: Investigating intimidation in North India Lucia Michelutti, UCL This article is an ethnographic investigation into acts of intimidation and threats. Theoretically, it dialogues with ‘racket’ – a key analytical term in the sociology of domination, state‐making, and mafias. The anthropology of power, violence, and crime has paid scant attention to the morphology of threats and the ways interpersonal intimidation intertwines with economic and political forms of coercion. Drawing on ethnographic insights from North India, the article examines the way (criminal) intimidation is normalized, consented to, and socially embedded in everyday life. It shows how racketeering is routinized beyond clandestine organized crime. Ultimately, ‘racket sociality’ is proposed as a new method of ethnographic inquiry into theorizing authority and legitimacy in an age of populist strongmen politics and predatory forms of capitalism.
