Columbus wasn't Italian, Italy as a state didnt exist until the 1860s.

He was a Genoese born merchant who spoke Portuguese, and served under the Spanish crown of Castile and Leon. Which then became the Spain.

It's like retroactively saying that Caesar was Italian, when Caesar was Roman.
