A lot of veterans that fought in integrated units or commands came home with very different ideas about their fellow Americans than they left with. The US also did desegregate the army prior to the civil rights act because it turns out institutional racism is kind of a waste of materiel

Yes, a lot of the higher ups and the general structure of the military were incredibly exclusionary and racist. There are incredibly shameful things this country has done to non-white service members. However there's very little that punches through bigotry faster than taking fire with someone.
