The Merits of Momentum:

One of the great divides In spaceship gaming is the concept of "momentum." In part because lots of gamers are math-phobic, or they've had bad experiences with vector movement games In the past. It's easy, when unfamiliar with vector movement, to have a bad experience!

Hey #portfolioday!

I'm Kim, a fantasy artist in gaming and publishing who loves light and mood. Currently I work primarily on Magic: The Gathering and am actively seeking more book cover work!

Today is the birthday one of the most talented creators in TTRPGs, Jennell Jaquays, who passed away last year. Jennell was one of our company's earliest artists, and played an prominent role in Chaosium's success over many years, as an illustrator and writer.

Out of curiousity - did Gumroad do anything wrong?

(We don't use them, we have our own shop, but two of the artists we use use Gumroad and have inertia there, so -- completely ignorant if they've become problematic.)

What he'd love about farming if he bothered to research it, is that the H2A visa program is so widely abused that the Biden Administration increased enforcement of anti-slavery provisions because H2A visa temp worker firms skirted them.

Trump undid that and cut visa-worker pay rates by $3/hour.

Sadly, my contract with Blizzard ended in September. That means I'm looking for fulltime or contract work as a senior writer or narrative designer. If you need someone who can write sharp characters, poetic prose, and emotional stories, I'm available! www.hazelmonforton.com

It's #portfolioday! I'm presently a senior narrative designer at Blizzard, but before that I was at Bungie and Arkane. I wrote for the Writer's Guild award-nominated Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, and a bunch of critically acclaimed seasons and expansions in Destiny 2.

One can have democracy or great wealth disparity. It's increasingly obvious that having the latter undermines the former.

If buying an American-made game that's printed and assembled in the US matters to you as a consumer: We buy some components made in China (plastic bits, mostly) and the rest (and all printing) in the US.
Why doesn’t Cards Against Humanity print its game in the US? It’s complicated.
Price, quality, speed, and relationships all matter.

When you can use your spicy autocorrect to write all you SEC and shareholder-facing fiduciary reports, I'll listen.

Until then, make money by providing a service or product people want, not by lying to VC ghouls looking to gatekeep search results.

Dear Mr. Altman:

Unlike you, I make a product that turns a *profit.* That people pay *actual money* for. That doesn't have to be shoved into their web searches and office suites.

That encourages people to think with their own brains.

Sam Altman is a farmer of plastic display fruit
“If you’re, like, farming, you’re doing something people really need,” Altman explained. “You’re making them food, you’re keeping them alive. This is real work.” But the farmer would see our modern jobs as “playing a game to fill your time,” and therefore not a “real job.”

“It’s very possible that if we could see those jobs of the future,” Altman said, we’d think “maybe our jobs were not as real as a farmer’s job, but it’s a lot more real than this game you’re playing to entertain yourself.”

My finances are kinda shit right now, from losing my job in animation, investing in a tattoo career, & the high cost of living in LA.

As a result, I’m selling prints of my tattoo work! If you haven’t or can’t get a tattoo from me, consider a print (-:

As of tonight, I have validated (as in passed a lint check) and correct (it has all the tags expected) XML for the Squadron Strike to Starmada auto-converter.

Dan Kast will, no doubt, take this as an excuse to change how Starmada works...

As a small game publisher I/we (and our "civilian identity") share gaming and creator-related GoFundMes. This industry is small, close knit, and works in the liminal space between "hobby that pays for going to conventions" and "one foot in poverty."

Someday, it will be my turn to post one.

We're hoping for some shares here. Paula got into gaming 4 years ago and has loved it and plays TTRPGs with her daughter. We are looking to help her out with donations and spreading the word. I'm hoping some gaming companies can pick this up and share as well. More info here: gofund.me/231d524bb

when I worked on This Guilty Land, and immersed myself in antebellum primary documents, the thing that really struck me is how incrementalism today is just the same shit it was then, responding to the same kind of bad faith arguments by evil fuckers, & treating real change as impossible & infantile.

On Friday, we had our first meetup of a recurring Squadron Strike game night. If you're free at 8 PM Eastern on Fridays, we're building a casual play group on our Discord server (link in this account's profile).

We'll be happy to teach, and you can play on the weeks that work for you.
