A thread about pain stars, the little shapes used to visualize pain/impacts in comics. When I started looking at early modern cartoons across countries, I was struck by how universal these were. At the time (2010s), the story was still that ("Western") comics and manga were two different traditions.

I would have read a version of this book with twice as many chapters. Of course I savored the sections that helped fill in my blind spots, but I enjoyed the coverage of what I already knew almost as much. Here's hoping some college comics courses integrate it into the required reading.
