I was talking to a teacher friend today who said that once, 14 years ago, early in the school-year they wondered if a student plagiarized an extremely well-written essay, so they had them handwrite a new one. It was spot on excellent—they actually HAD written it. In other words,

What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

“D’Angelo’s First Album in 14 Years Is Finally Here, and It’s Surprisingly Timely” via TIME.

All we wanted was a chance to talk
'stead we only got outlined in chalk
feet have bled, a million miles we've walked
revealing, at the end of the day, the charade

I read my first AI essay of the year earlier, I might start requiring students to have a some grammatical errors and weird syntax/diction idiosyncrasies in their essays.

Ace in the Hole is arguably more noir stained than noir but I have a really inclusive definition, and any way you stretch it I consider it a masterpiece!

The festival really, really delivered this year. Between this and next weekend, four of my top ten favorites in detour, Ace in the hole, The Prowler, and Raw Deal!

Yes me too! Should’ve said I’ve seen that one — next weekend there are more new to me ones.

I went into Kiss of Death expecting greatness from Widmark, and he definitely delivered, but was sideswiped by one of Victor Mature’s best performances. I had always thought he was a bit 1-note before that!

I saw 11 movies on the big screen this weekend! The only one I missed (and am planing to catch midweek) is Kiss of Death. Some cool new-to-me movies in The Sleeping City, Alias Nick Beal, Tension, and Mary Ryan, Detective 👇

Movie no. 11, "Mary Ryan, Detective" (1949).

This movie is so much fun. It's hard to believe this was only the one-off movie and not also a TV series or an adventure comic strip a la Secret Agent X9 or Rip Kirby. Marsha Hunt understood the assignment perfectly, & there's some very cute comic gags.

Movie no. 10, "Tension" (1949).

Detective 1: "Have you noticed any change in Richard Basehart?"
Detective 2: "New glasses?"
Detective 1: "No ... he looks like something might be disturbing him."
Detective 2: "Probably misses his old glasses."

Movie no. 9, "Alias Nick Beal" (1949). Imagine the conversation went something like:

"We need to cast someone to play a perfect Dev—"
"Ray Milland!"

I was thinking the same thing! It actually felt like an adventure comic strip series a la Secret Agent X9
