was not about you’re reply, you are completely correct (not that you need me to verify it)

(this is just me having watched a few too many YouTube critics who talk about books like they're analyzing court cases. there _is_ a line that fiction can cross that makes its moral reprehensible, but that line's a lot more obvious than "this does mental health poorly.")
zhandlen.bsky.social
i want to be careful here, because i'm _not_ yelling about "wokeness" or anything like that--if a work makes you uncomfortable, that's a valid, authentic response. but fiction _isn't real_, and doesn't have to be morally correct to be engaging and powerful.
zhandlen.bsky.social
criticism of fiction that leans more into the specific critic's view of morality (and how such and such book fails that morality) and less into the actual construction and intent of the work bums me out.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

the number of comedians "posting through" the Riyadh thing is truly inspiring. yes, please, keep yelling at us about how _we're_ the real monsters, that will definitely change minds.

hm? sorry, i was just thinking about how the latest adaptation of PET SEMATARY managed to fuck up one of King's best, most straightforward stories in the stupidest way possible, and how i wish the first PET SEMATARY movie was better, and also, this can't be an Arby's because that place burned down

A great moment from Oliver:

“While I would love to keep splitting hairs on whether a country’s starving kids is better or worse if those kids are already sick, let’s just table that discussion for when I see you in hell.”

I started with the Book of the New Sun (I think?), and have enjoyed the whole Solar Cycle so far, but he can be very hit or miss with me—there are novels where he leans so hard into the puzzle stuff that I can’t connect with the story at all (hated Castleview, for example)

I like Wolfe a lot, but I really have to be in the right mood for him—i like authors that use obfuscation, and it’s fun to listen to podcasts that break down the details, but I need to be willing to just not “get” a lot and be okay with that.

This game rules btw.

The temptation to take an edible and just zonk out for the bulk of the day is pretty strong, I must admit.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

Can I have one more battlefield? Pleeeeeease

finished Silent Hill f, which has some cool stuff but apparently it wants me to replay the whole game to figure out what the fuck happened. dunno if I’m up for that.

finished rereading ‘Salem’s Lot today; i love how, with some scenes, you can actually feel King thinking “oh yeah, this is the shit right here, this is how I -rock-“ (not in a bragging way, just that creative joy that hits when a story pops off)

Yeah, I really loved Urth by the time I finished it. Good book!

decided to put on DRESSED TO KILL, and Prime recommended BLAME IT ON RIO, a movie about Michael Caine having sex with a teenager, I think.

of course the new Tron movie is bad, all Tron movies are bad, the original is incredibly stupid, and the concept is dumb. it _looks_ neat, and Jeff Bridges is charismatic as fuck, and that's basically it.

(i will, of course, watch the new Tron movie as God intended: at home, stoned out of my mind)

[email protected] makes a very appropriate Trek reference in this. It pleased me, as did the rest of the content. Also, there were no "Avalanche?" "I'll take two!" jokes, which is probably for the best.

The most recent Hallmark pod is about a dead earnest educational film on avalanche safety with a romance plot grafted onto it that's somehow both hornier and more inert than average. What a studio!

I wrote about Mario Galaxy and a slightly unwelcome reminder of the "Screw it, toss in some motion controls" era

Dying Light 2 is -weird-. So much story, but I also just got an in-game option to rate a mission I just finished. Also, it opened with a video actor thanking me for how much I apparently love the “characters” and “world” of the franchise. Fucking -relax-, game.
