Generative video is going to destroy the world. Here I am, at a protest I never went to in a city that doesn’t exist being arrested by cops I’ve never met

The world is seeing a realignment: international law and green energy on one side; real politik and fossil fuels on the other. Which one does Canada want to bet its chips on? Which one does it want to help build?

I can't help but see the parallel here with the fight over slavery in the United States. In 1850, there was an available future of capitalism in which slavery was maintained--one the South desperately wanted to bring about. Part of Canada today, too, is working to build an immoral future

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap
HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "I'm willing to pay more for quality products if they are made in America, by Americans, who are paid a decent income." The tweet shows Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" painting, which is often used to show the tweeter is expressing a brave opinion. HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "MINIMUM WAGE JOBS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE A CAREER. Why does no one understand this? Entry level jobs are STEPPING STONES to better jobs. No one wants to work towards that though." HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "Buy $5 gloves instead of $50 ones. Trust me." The tweet shows a box of "Gorilla Grip" gloves. The label on Gorilla Grip gloves show they're made in China.

The obvious solution to the Columbus Day discourse is that Americans should celebrate today as "Canadian Thanksgiving"

Any argument re what Canada should produce more of in the future needs to wrestle with what kind of future we'll be living in. Does Canada want to be an "energy superpower" in a petro-fueled climate apocalypse? Just as important, is that actually an option given direction pursued by Europe & China?
xntl.info
It's disturbing to see arguments that Canada should ramp up oil and gas production that avoid using the word "climate change," but also enraging that this one make the economic case while ignoring the tens of billions dollars worth of solar panels that China is building across the world
Opinion: Why, indeed, should Canada be an energy superpower?
As a top producer of oil and natural gas, Canada has the capability – but not yet the will – to become a global energy leader

"the great thing about the power hoovering bullshit demon is how easy it makes it to lie to women about what I'm like, find interesting, or care about"

this is sociopathic behaviour and I think we need to treat it as such! just because something has become easy to do doesn't mean it has become less creepy, or more acceptable!

in 2011, the president of antifa hired me to give fashion consultancy to the organization. i recommended everyone wear navy suits with tan shoes, dress sneakers, and golf polos with slim chinos. if you arrested everyone today wearing these things, you'd destroy antifa

I don't know what is more awe-inspiring: Mamdani's absolutely phenomenal skills as a political communicator (hard hitting, emotionally charged, but without sacrificing nuance), or the fact that the combination is so rare in today's politics
atrupar.com
Mamdani: "Trump ran on 3 promises - punishment of his political enemies, easing cost of living crisis, & mass deportation. It's that second promise that brought so many to his campaign. And yet he's unable & unwilling to deliver bc he's beholden to the very billionaires that are profiting off of it"

Reading request! If you could recommend one text that explored the history of an idea/concept in a riveting and surprising way what would it be? Please re-skeet if you can. I know this is a niche ask.
