Today's @hmiprisonsnews.bsky.social report on work and training is worrying yet unsurprising. The government needs to fix prison regimes and the first step should be reversing cuts to education budgets that will only make a bad situation worse.

It is 100 years since #Thatcher was born. Read my thoughts on her legacy in this week's #TheBigIssue here:

Margaret Thatcher's legacy continues to cast its long shadow
Britain is still living the consequences of the ideas Margaret Thatcher injected into British political discourse and policymaking.

It will be interesting to see what Ministers are prepared to say about the China spying case from the despatch box. I am surprising that this morning's line to take still seems to turn on China not having been "designated" a threat/enemy by the last government. /1

Its the problem with a society and a political class that has been corrupted by #ThinkTanks into believing that cultural problems that emerge from capitalist exploitation/consumerism can only be resolved by formal legislation!

Its one of the more toxic legacies of the Blair years.

No, it's not. It's all a lie. The blunt truth is across the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them.

Outstanding piece by Stephen Daisley.

Ethnicity is no barrier to Britishness - it's culture and integration.

That means 'smaller cohorts and aggressive integration policies' - and tackling the institutions that 'have amplified grievance narratives and radical anti-Western ideologies'.

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

David is slightly unfair. There is a clear difference here.

Conservatives and Reform plan to forcibly expel large numbers of people who are legal, permanent residents of migrant origin. The BNP proposal is voluntary.

This below is from the 2005 BNP manifesto.

Spot the difference with current Tory and Reform policy.

Point one here is a disturbing example of the #ELIZAEffect

Dangerous if this becomes common in #academia and #HigherEducation

Those in the #SocialSciences need to do better in terms of challenging the #AIPropganda being pushed by predatory #TechBarons so this delusion does not impact our students
oxinabox.bsky.social
We need "you are not immune to propaganda" but for AI use risks

We have seen too many cases of
1. Highly educated folk starting to believe LLMs are sentient.
2. Folk with no prior mental health issues becoming delusional.
3. Prrofessionals becoming reliant on it to do things they could do better.

The safety of minority groups is never ever achieved by giving police greater powers.
senthorun.bsky.social
“Police forces will be granted powers to put conditions on repeat protests…”

It’s scary that the British government is making it harder for people to protest. You can’t end one form of racism by encouraging another. The safety of minoritised groups will not be achieved by giving police more powers.
Police to get broader powers to crack down on repeated protests
Officers will be able to tell organisers to move demonstrations if protests have caused

Currently at:
— only buy tech too old to have AI built in
— painstakingly disable AI every time they add it to something that used to work perfectly well
— if it can't be switched off, abandon the platform or tool
— if there are no good alternatives, avoid the AI parts
— patiently wait for the crash

I spoke on BBC Breakfast this morning about the Panorama Documentary showing abusive police at Charing Cross station.

We've heard the same things for decades, the commissioner apologises and promises change but then nothing happens and public pressure dies down.

‘Universities “Exploiting Students as Cheap Staff”’

from Tim Devlin, Education Correspondent, Liverpool, April 3

Postgraduate students, it was alleged here today, are being exploited as cheap labour by the universities and their ‘appalling’ rates of pay are being used to keep down the wages of other staff, particularly laboratory technicians
