Hey, I'm Janna and I write Urban Fantasy at the end of the world (aka NZ) and I'm currently torn in two by writing the final book in my Parisian Ghosts series and marketing the first one in my upcoming YA series: Wyld Lands Academy (🤫 99c in my store janna-ruth.myshopify.com/products/wyl...)

#WritingLifeMonthly 14: I just drew one of the scenes that I thought might make a good cover for The Dragonblood. Let me know what you think. (Not ready to reveal my IRL name yet, and I don't have a pen name, so you get my BlueSky handle instead.)

#Art #DigitalArt #Krita
Cover mockup of The Dragonblood. The title is written at the top, and the author, @miwwdu-sitsom.bsky.social, is written at the bottom, but I would replace this with my name in the final version.

In a mountainous region with a few cave entrances visible, there's a green dragon, surrounded by larger dragons of various colours: yellow, red, brown and white. A purple dragon is landing to join the circle. In the slightly cloudy sky, a blue dragon flies.

In the foreground, Felix, wearing a blue shirt, hides behind a bush to film the scene with his phone. We see Felix's messy blond hair from the back.

Made in Krita.

Oops, missed a day!

I think too many people still think self-publishing is the “easy way out” because the author couldn’t get a trad deal. Let me tell you! Self-pub is tremendously hard work and all the burdens that trad would host on the publisher are foisted upon the author. Not easy at all!

Not exactly a mockup, but I created this for PosterPit and decided that once I decide on hiring an artist to create a cover for me, this will definitely be a visual aide I use during that discussion!

There are some things about it that are ill-fitting, but the vibe is there.
Movie poster style pitch for The Gerzean Blade
Tagline: An ancient blades, an ambitious PI, a web of secrets and lies
Directed by Natalia Denise Griffin

Image is a skull buried in soil, a beautiful stone knife, and a young woman leaning against a car on a long road while looking at a map. At the bottom is the St Louis skyline overwritten by illegible text reminiscent of the details on a movie poster.

“Isabelle, you never fail to keep me happy.” Evan was reading off his phone, which Madi found ruined the entire aesthetic of this wedding. What happened to printing out or handwriting vows? At Syd’s wedding, they had personalized stationary and envelopes that the officiant kept in his pocket and handed to them when it was time.

#WritingLifeMonthly 14. I did some calculations--my book is actually 8 years old. This is the Real Cover. My mom is a talented photographer and took the photo, then did some Adobe magic with it. My cousin was gracious enough to be the model--on her wedding day! Good memories.🙂

I figure I’ll give Sunrise the grunge texture & star overlay like the others, but it’ll be the only one without the bloody handprint.

Promotional image for the techno-thriller novel Dancing in the Purple Rain by Judy L. Mohr. The book cover shows a person in a purple hooded coat standing in a rainy, neon-lit dystopian cityscape. Overlaying text describes the book's key themes: "Dystopian," "Altered Reality," "Government Corruption," "Strong Female Protagonist," "DNA Modification," "Secrets," and "Post-Apocalyptic." At the top, the tagline reads: "The rain is starting..." and the subheading above the title says: "Being special can make you a target." The genre label “Techno Thriller” is featured at the bottom.

Some of the covers for my books! The first three are photos I took! And the fourth is my digital artwork!
Water's Edge cover: Water
Photo of a dark lake at night
Water's Edge in light blue
Uncanny Encounters in white
Ellie Lieberman in light blue
in a glitchy font

An Impossible Dream cover: Photo of a vintage book laying on it's side, pages facing out, on a stone background. Lace draped over the top in front of three melted candles, also on the top of the vintage book's cover. Two of the candles are lit. Sewing pins and purple violet flowers are scattered on and around the vintage book. "by Ellie Lieberman" is in a white colored pretty script font above the vintage book. "An Impossible Dream" is in the same font and color on a slant below the book.
A Dragon's Treasure cover: Purple dragon scale background. Shadier in the top right corner and a glare of light in the bottom left corner. Centered title "A Dragon's Treasure" in glowing white text with a purple off set. The word "A" and "Treasure" are in a capital plain text. The word "Dragon's" is in cursive. In the same cursive text, in white, reads "Ellie Lieberman" centered at the bottom.
A Dance of Bow & Blade cover: Digital artwork of a sword intertwined with an archery bow. Awen symbol in all four corners. Red and white celtic knot of a dragonfly above the pummel. Green leafy background forming a spiral in the background. Words arched to match the curve of the guard above the guard reads "A Dance of" To the left of the sword between the bow string and the bottom of the guard reads "Bow" On the blade of the sword in the center of the inside of the bow reads "&" To the right, below the handle of the bow and above the end of the sword reads "Blade." Beneath the tip of the sword reads "Ellie Lieberman."

I'm on a quite serious story right now, but I need some levity as reprive while still staying in character and tone. Tricky stuff.

I think that all authors have to have a degree in writing. I have a BS in mathematics and a MS in clinical mental health. You can write with no post-secondary education. You don't have to know everything about writing in order to write a good book.

These are good points!
I'm going to add that writer's block isn't how it appears in the movies. It isn't so much that you can't get words out and need inspiration, but rather you know something is off about the plot or a character that you just can't put your finger on.

1. Being a successful writer ≠ being a GOOD writer. There are many aspects to becoming a popular author and skill is not necessarily at the top of that list.
2. Original doesn't mean 'never been done before'. Most art has inspiration and originality comes from how the story is presented.

My newest WIP is one that my brain begged to start writing in October, so I did to shut it up.
It's a literary novella with elements of magical realism and dual timeline and POV.
#WritingLifeMonthly #writing #writingcommunity #writersky
Excerpt from manuscript:
I don't mean to pry on our daughter's progress settling in, but I do take a peek inside. Her bed is the only thing that has the aura of being part of a home, the rest, is all brown cardboard and colourful mess. The desk is covered in a books, the stack ready the topple at the touch of a breeze. I sigh, remembering, vaguely, what it's like to be fourteen. And of course, I didn't get moved halfway across Europe at that age, but change schools and a city, I did.

On the railing outside, a jackdaw is perched, its blue eyes peering into the room. I stare back. It caws, whether in greeting or warning, I don't know, and springs into flight. For a split second, I fear it's going to smack straight into the french door and leave nothing but a bloody imprint of itself. I have just enough time to panic what I would tell Willow happened if she came home and found me cleaning bird guts off her bedroom window, before the jackdaw swiftly soars, gracefully avoiding any parts of the house.

The two myths that @traceyleewrites.bsky.social added to her comment for today's #writingLifeMonthly prompt were good myths to debunk. But I'd also like to add:

* write what you know (because #writers are good researchers!)
* if you get the traditional contract, you have it made. (Total bollocks!)

👉writing a book is the hardest part of being an author👈

This is…half-true, but I think marketing books & getting people to read them is just as hard (if not harder) than finishing a book is, and the time/effort spent on marketing makes writing more books even more difficult.
