I’ll always be a Yankees fan, but my Giants fandom is a much more comfortable and natural fit for me: the modal Giants team is a heartbreaking mediocrity, but they can be counted on to catch lightning in a bottle enough to not be existentially bad like the Browns or something.

I worked at a Cub Scout camp for a few summers. One time, a pack decided to have lunch off-site and didn’t tell the mess hall. We had dozens of extra grilled cheeses, so staff had to eat them or they’d go in the trash. I ate 17 grilled cheeses that day. Sometimes I worry I’ll never be that happy.

When I was at BC, there were always flattering urban legends about foreign students who had buyers remorse for attending our hated rival Boston University. Once they got here, they realized that BC was a better school but sounded less prestigious for being a college and not a university.

I try to make this point all the time. What makes housing affordable is one or a combination of three factors: 1. It’s old 2. It’s in bad shape 3. It’s in a market where housing is abundant. You definitionally cannot build 1 or 2. The third factor is the only one we have any control over.

It's true that it's essentially impossible for builders to build "naturally-affordable" housing in high-demand areas that haven't built a lot. The shittiest code-compliant new housing is still much nicer than most kinds of older housing and will rent for more.

It’s not an exemption. The statewide ADU legalization was an amendment to Chapter 40A, the zoning enabling act for the 350 other cities and towns in the Commonwealth. Boston has separate zoning enabling legislation which has not been amended to mandate ADUs

I’m so old I remember when we couldn’t have a Popeye’s on Washington Street because there’s too much fried chicken in the neighborhood and we wanted a fresh, local option instead. Now to take a big sip of coffee and check out the healthy takeout restaurant that’s surely occupying that storefront
