Cover of Bad Language by So Mayer: hand-drawn illustration of an illuminated capital B, which is a grey dragon wrapped around a blue tree. The dragon has a red eye and smoke rising from its nostrils. The author's name and book title are written in a simple, non-joined-up cursive, as if on a chalkboard.

Hahahaha area writer not even capable of such dreams. Just being able to answer a simple email on time would suffice.

In politics it’s even worse.
The attempt to turn every structural problem, every fight over allocation of resources, every fundamental ideological division, every conflict over power into something that can be solved with the right jingle and messaging.

University leaders: [terminate programs, close campuses, cave in to political pressure from demagogues]

Faculty, students, staff: you’re killing the university

Management consultants: looks like you got a real comms challenge here

Gerald Kersh was a Jewish Londoner, by turns professional wrestler, journalist, bouncer, soldier, writer in any number of lengths and genres, alcoholic, and terminal bullshit artist, whose novels can be weird, baffling, hilarious, sick, or the bleakest thing you've ever read, often simultaneously.

I wish someone would do for picture books what Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics does for comics and graphic novels

Guys, Sam Altman owns OpenAI. He knows what a bullshit job is. He knows what bullshit work is. He is profits handsomely off of bullshit. What he's actually talking about is, (and this is almost always true of these billionaire freaks) is eugenics. He is talking about who is disposable.

Librarians with Greek or Latin, a modern European language (other than English) and a publication record focused on the period 1500-1750 preferred. Sounds like a fantastic post, tbh.

Area writer bewildered to find that finishing their book has not, in fact, magically made them either an extrovert or neurotypical.

What the Twitter takeover did so effectively was fracture the way we get our news. If, for example, I want to get in-depth updates on Sudan I still check in with Twitter as that's where a lot of the biggest accounts are. There's no one-stop shop anymore.

Zbigniew Herbert wrote a poem on chess, referencing Deep Blue...

so this is how
a kingly game
passes into the hands of automatons

we must break it out of
the prison camp at night

when mind drowses
machines are roused

the quest for the imagination
must be begun all over again

Today marks two years since 37 year old Lebanese video journalist Issam Abdallah was killed by Israeli tank-fire while filming across the southern border and wearing a press vest.

Holding Issam's loved ones in my heart today as they keep his memory alive and fight for accountability. 🤍
