I'm one of the four fired employees. I was a writer & producer at Bon Appétit for nearly five years, during which I helped organize our union and sat on our bargaining committee.

I am, to my knowledge, the only trans woman in our union and the only trans woman on editorial who doesn't work at Them
New: Conde Nast fired four employees who were among a group that confronted the company's head of human resources on Wednesday over the decision to fold Teen Vogue into Vogue/recent cuts. Employees who were fired included journalists from the New Yorker, Wired, and Bon Appétit.

thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

📽️ WATCH: The U.S. government doesn’t track how often immigration agents detain citizens. So ProPublica did.

We found more than 170 incidents since the start of Trump’s second term. Americans have been kicked, dragged and held for days without access to lawyers.

The Bari Weiss-led CBS News has had this up for 3 days and misspelled his name in the hed.
CBS News would never put a thinly sourced 'story' by a rookie blogger like this on it's air. Until now. The Free Press isn't a journalism outlet, it's bloggers aren't reporters. This piece is more NYPost than Tiffany Network but I guess that's the goal.

In Alabama, a trans civil rights lawyer is facing criminal charges; three civil rights lawyers are fighting sanctions.

I spoke to @chrisgeidner.bsky.social about how federal judges came after a team of civil rights lawyers who challenged a transgender care ban

BREAKING: @lambdalegal.org strongly criticizes the federal indictment of one of its lawyers in Alabama, calling it "an outrageous act of governmental overreach" that followed "unprecedented and abusive judicial proceedings."

Massachusetts is outdoing other states because they are the first to require insurers to cover the cost of COVID shots and other vaccines recommended by state health officials.

Vaccines are not accessible if they are unaffordable. Every state needs to follow their lead!
This term SCOTUS will decide whether states can ban harmful, discredited, conversion “therapy” practices. I’m honored that these resilient survivors entrusted us to tell their stories: www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/24...

None of this is to say that a cert grant is impossible, that overturning Obergefell isn’t a serious goal of this admin, or that people shouldn’t start thinking about ways to protect themselves and their families, but I am approaching all of this coverage with skepticism and a lot of questions.
Davis filed her most recent petition on July 24. I can only find 2 articles about it in July from Catholic News Agency and Courthouse News Service. Weeks later, it’s all over social and mainstream media as if it happened yesterday. Why? Did someone tip off MSM? In whose interest is it to fuel panic?
In fact, Davis asked the Court to hear her case in 2020 and cert was denied. Reporting on it was slim, because again, cert petitions are rarely newsworthy.
Despite misleading headlines, the Court has not decided yet whether to take up the case. SCOTUS receives 7 to 8 thousand cert petitions each year and decides to hear ~80. Rarely do petitions that haven’t been granted make national news because there is roughly a 1% they will even be heard.
There is so much context missing from the discussion of the Davis cert petition. People are understandably scared. It’s also incredibly dangerous to act like same sex marriage has already been overturned and much of the mainstream reporting is frankly irresponsible.

A mother and her teenage daughter in Pennsylvania have been arrested because the 17 year old self performed an abortion and they buried the fetal remains in the backyard.

They didn’t violate the abortion ban.

So why have they been arrested?

Every jailhouse lawyer knows Dee Farmer’s name, even if they don’t know who she is.

What most of them don’t know is that the person who paved the road for them was a transgender woman who filed her suit from a federal prison cell, in an era when her gender identity was considered a mental illness.
In Prison, She Changed Constitutional Law. Meet the Trans Woman Behind the Case.

NEW: The Supreme Court will decide next term whether states may lawfully prohibit transgender women and girls from participating in school sports on the women's team.

In light of Skrmetti, the answer will likely be "yes." www.supremecourt.gov/orders/court...

Such a good point on SCOTUS hypocrisy when it comes to Trump vs Biden:

They let a nationwide injunction kill Biden’s student loan relief when they had a chance to rule on it.

5 months into Trump’s presidency, suddenly nationwide injunctions are a grave threat to executive power and they must rule.

The left better start figuring out how to weaponize today's decision rather than just (rightfully) criticizing it.

- Go back into Judge Kaczmaryk's court to dissolve all of his nationwide orders.

- Pass gun bans and insist any order applies only to plaintiffs.

It’s telling how the Christian right’s role in getting Skrmetti to SCOTUS is being erased—and by those seemingly desperate to blame trans people for asking for “too much.” So I spoke with legal historian @kredburn.bsky.social and ACLU attorney @chasestrangio.bsky.social, who argued the case:
What Everyone Is Getting Wrong About SCOTUS’s Transgender Ruling
The Skrmetti decision to uphold a state ban on gender-affirming care for minors was not as sweeping as it seems—nor is the trans rights movement to blame for it.
