I'm teaching 7 writing intensive courses and am process forward, so the volume of writing and reading I do for work pretty much burns me out on words every day.

I miss writing creatively.

I want to do it, but I have almost certainly written at least 100,000 words of student feedback in the last 8 weeks, and I'm burnt out on words. I dunno how to fix that.

Jokes on them. I run it in a browser that blocks ads.

But also: yes, you should stop paying them. Vote with your wallet here. There are other services.

I hate this timeline.

My day thus far:

Taught classes. They went well.

Drove up the wrong way to my county admin building because the signs saying not to were green and I didn't think a tiny green sign that didn't block the way would mean the obvious 2 way was a one way.

Showed up too early for my appt.

Went bald.

There are exceptions. I especially appreciate when pop history books tell you they are operating within the constraints of a story and then point you to additional works to read to fill the gaps.
shaunduke.net
I lack the authority to assess these books properly because it isn't my field. So I rely heavily on the credibility of the author and the publisher, and too often, popular history books lack both...

Books like this are the reason I struggle with historical research that isn't aggressively academic or primary source. There is far too much leeway granted outside of those spaces for me to trust most of it.
shaunduke.net
That pretty much kills any interest I have on that book. Even if I accept the framing, the presentation is deeply unserious and pathetically simple.

"Sapiens" is so normal for the first 70,000 years of human history but then goes absolutely buckwild as soon as it gets to colonialism
Had the Aztecs and Incas shown a bit more interest in the world surrounding them - and had they known what the Spaniards had done to their neighbours - they might have resisted the Spanish conquest more keenly and successfully.

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

Sorry all. No stream tonight. Turns out we won't be home from Minneapolis in time, plus I have work to finish that takes priority.

Next Sunday, though, will be a Boar'd to Death Mistlands nightmare to amuse!

Sad to learn that Diane Keaton passed. I've enjoyed so much of her work, and she leaves a remarkable film legacy for future generations to enjoy.

A more recent film of hers that I particularly enjoyed was 2018's Book Club (w/ other greats), which I recommend watching in her honor.

The thing I need to know is what makes this interesting beyond its premise. The director? Is that it? Cause that seems to be it here.
