A mature 'flying' rowan growing alongside a yew at Loch Lomond. Sometimes called 'cuckoo' or 'air' trees, flying trees are often rowans, because their seeds are easily deposited in high branches by birds. Unusual to see one so big though! 'Flying' tree facts 👉 buff.ly/pBJNCJo #ThickTrunkTuesday

Tree and field, stones and sunlight.

Photo of the trunk of a mature tree growing in a gap in a low wall of stacked stones. The image highlights the texture of the stones and bark, dappled with sunlight. Beyond the tree and stone wall is a vivid green field with mown grass and distant trees. Taken at the Glass House historic site in New Canaan, Connecticut.

Blue Penguin
lucagalletti.bsky.social
Blue penguins are the smallest species of penguins in the world and are largely solitary at sea (hence why it's not with other penguins) This blue penguin adult had a severe head wound and was entangled in a plastic net. New Zealand's coast is often under rough conditions.

Today's historic pic: L class tram no 104 running a trip to Royal Park Zoo in Elizabeth St, Melbourne, March 9 1986. 1921-built L class trams were withdrawn from normal service in 1980, but 104 ran these tourist-oriented Sunday zoo trips until the 1990s. She's now at the Hawthorn Tramway museum.
Tall commercial buildings line each side of a commercial street in the central business district of Melbourne with the tower of Flinders Street station forming a terminated vista in the background. An L class tram in brown and cream livery with the number 104 painted in gold leaf on its front apron is approaching us with a number of 1970s/80s era private cars either side of it. The tram is displaying a ZOO Royal Park on its desto roll, and hung from its near side front window is a handwritten supplementary board displaying the same destination.

“… trams are nothing new on the streets of Bristol. The city was one of the first in the country and indeed the world to install a tram network, and at its heyday it was the envy of many other cities”

I’m actually in Berlin atm, but today we popped to nearby Potsdam and checked out the trams there. Each vehicle is unidirectional, with doors only on the right-hand side and turning loops at each terminus. The system has run continuously since 1907. #TramTuesday
A Tatra KT4 tram and a Variotram, both in the green and white livery of the Potsdam tramway, waiting on the turning loop of the terminus at Rehbrücke. An orange liveried track maintenance vehicle, near the Alter Markt stop of the Potsdam Tramway. A green and white Variotram of the Potsdam tramway passing through the Nauener gate. Two green and white Tatta KT4 trams of the Potsdam Tramway passing each other near the Nauener gate.

On this day, 10 Jan 1949, Manchester finally managed to abandon its first generation electric tramways - a process started over a decade earlier but delayed by war. The brochure commemorating the event. @showmeasign.online #transport #manchester

↘️ flic.kr/p/absDCF
Manchester was one of the first British cities to repudiate the first generation of tramways - the electrified system opened in 1901 (under municipal control) having started life as horse drawn tramways in 1877. By the late 1920s the city decided to replace the tram system with buses - and, although the Department felt put upon, trolleybuses. The trams would most likely have gone c1941/2 but for the outbreak of war - it took another decade to finally scrap the system. Now, of course, Manchester is in the vanguard of re-introducing electric traction to the UK in the form of Metrolink.

The cover commemorating the end of the system on 10 January 1949 shows the whole gamut of varying forms of transportation that formed part of the history of the tram (including horse drawn ones) - the last illustration is of the last type of cars built for the city, known as Pilcher cars, many of which saw secondhand service in other towns after Manchester scrapped them. All text and illustrations are in white on a blue background and the city's coat of arms is also shown
