I had the heaviest workload of any SE editor this year, while fitting in two trips to japan, so I’m excited for next (this?) year to be a bit less crazy…

I will say there is one translator whose work I really enjoy reading (polly barton) and I purposely read everything she’s done. she consistently does an incredible job!

and also this translator renders ハンバーグ as “hamburger” which I personally hate because it makes zero sense if you’re reading with no deep knowledge of japanese culture/yoshoku dishes, which is most english readers

(my preferred translation for that is “hamburg steak.” it’s not perfect but it works)

I’m not going to name any names but… I have been reading through all novels by a particular author, who is always translated into english by the same translator, and even though this person is a respected literary translator, the books are full of “Eh?” which is clearly え？

like… do better!!
