Never done a Halloween name before, but I will not be putting an H on the end of my name for the sake of the sound. The H from my last name will have to get the job done. 🐈‍⬛

We have a huge announcement. We are proud to announce The Lentil Book. It will be a while before it’s available, but it will be the definitive book on lentils. From Norton.

I quoted this already but want to quote it again just because of how much of a failure of empathy this is. If the institution you’re at attempts to quantify pain in this fashion, that means the staff there are too bereft of empathy to treat you properly.

“In nursing homes, neonatal units, and ICU wards, researchers are racing to turn pain—medicine’s most subjective vital sign—into something a camera or sensor can score as reliably as blood pressure.”
AI is changing how we quantify pain
Artificial intelligence is helping health-care providers better assess their patients’ discomfort.

When I got it, I was like "Hmmm I must have entered some giveaway that put me on this newsletter. Oh well."

But never mind!

They're cool with women in leadership and [mostly, getting there, depends on the individual church] cool with queer people, which is helpful.

I've read both Morgan Talty books shown here, plus The Marrow Thieves and The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, and I recommend them all, as long as you know going in they are all quite grim in their own ways.

We may have been out of the office yesterday, but that doesn't mean we're going to miss out on bulking up your #TBR stack in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Featuring @sgj.bsky.social, @waub.bsky.social, @reelindian.bsky.social, Morgan Talty, Cherie Dimaline, and Vanessa Lillie.

A deepy grey textured background features white text glowing with orange: "16 Indigenous Authors to Revitalize Your TBR." White text beneath this reads "What we're reading in dark speculative fiction," with an orange swoosh underlining the last few words. The Ruadán Books logo appears centered at the bottom. A deep brown textured background features four book covers subtly outlined in glowing orange. The books are arranged in two rows of two, and an author's name appears above each set. The top row reads "Stephen Graham Jones" and features the book covers for My Heart Is a Chainsaw and The Buffalo Hunter Hunter. The bottom row reads "Waubgeshig Rice" and features the book covers for Moon of the Crusted Snow and Moon of the Turning Leaves. a lot of these blowhard pundits from the op-edigarchy who think they are the thought leaders of the party will never make a fraction of the impact of a Facebook group of white women in their 60s throwing fundraising teas to move the needle on abortion access at the grassroots level

my Aunt Kathleen, who passed away last February, was a lifelong Crafts Person and a Catholic fundraiser party hostess practically from the cradle. for the last decade she precision-targeted that energy toward pro-choice women Democrats in small-town NC. she was worth 100 dirtbag online leftbros

This is why I got so mad about that person telling me what to do with my time and limited capacity before. For one, it's easier to make someone mad when they're in pain. For another, people in chronic pain who are showing up as much as they can don't need to be told to do more or what to prioritize.
