I see I’ve gotten a bunch of new followers so let me introduce myself: I’m a grad student from Charlottesville now living in Belgium. I research non-state actors and genocide. Mostly I post mostly about international conflict, cats, and stuff I see around Europe.
please someone tell me if uva is really capitulating. I feel like I’m going insane

There's a lesson to be learned here in that a lot of people looked at Mamdani and Platner and decided that the latter was a "young authentic candidate" and the former was not for reasons they insist are not racist
“What if we get young “authentic” candidates with no political experience, run them in high profile races, and roll them out the with the political media and small dollar donors with little to no vetting?”

Those were your grandpappys enemies. Let's see your brother get an ISIS flag tattoo
my brother has a SS tattoo on his body.

you read that right. a literal SS.

he was a 'S'cout 'S'niper. Marines often used the flag, yes the flag youre probably thinking of, as their own symbol in group pics.

as he told me many times "we take our enemy's symbols. just be glad you dont understand."

If state and local parties were doing their jobs for the past 50 years, it would be so easy - it SHOULD be so easy - to simply discard one Guy and replace him with another Guy. There should be a ton of Guys (gender neutral), for exactly the reasons we see here.
I don't understand why so many people are saying "good luck finding a man without a Nazi tattoo!!!" like bro how many of you are there

The 60,000 men and women responsible for keeping American skies safe have gone unpaid throughout the government shutdown. Without an agreement soon, many will be forced to dip into savings, rack up credit-card debt, or take on part-time jobs reut.rs/49mvVVw
this is all infuriating but it’s made even worse that this occurred back in October 2024. DHS has always been like this, not just under the trump administration

As a diplomat, I served in several countries where most government jobs were filled by patronage appointments. It’s a guarantee for ineffectiveness and corruption.
On the question of politicization of public services, we don't have much data AFAIK. However, data collected in 2024 and 2025 show striking shifts.
One-third of Republicans agreed the President should be able to choose who works in any any public job in 2024, now its two-thirds.

I genuinely like Seth personally, I’ve followed years of valuable work he’s produced & I feel like he, in his heart, knows this is basically a ridiculous concept.

There is no American Grand Strategy. Dead.

There may be a “Democratic Grand Strategy” someday.

There’s clearly an authoritarian one.
It is time for the United States to develop a new strategy for countering China’s advantages in the Pacific, argues Seth Jones. “Washington needs to prioritize defeating and deterring Beijing, much as it focused on the Soviet Union during the Cold War.”
The Pentagon’s Missing China Strategy
Washington still lacks a credible military plan for deterring Beijing.

Blocked someone for skeeting that the No Kings protests "didn't accomplish anything"

Oh, I'm so sorry that 7,000,000+ Americans taking to the streets to be in community and send a very clear message of regime change two days ago hasn't fixed everything just yet

I'm sure your plan is better

a hot take about academia: it is both too activist and not activist enough. the endless focus on problematizing critiquing, etc etc often degenerates into navel gazing, while there is often a lack of high-quality outcome oriented empirical work on "what could make social institution XYZ work better"

Also notable that despite the willingness of this administration to pursue baseless prosecutions, it just turned these survivors—who it accuses of being “narcoterrorists”—loose.

i think this is why Charlie Kirk's death shook the right so much. For all their prognosticating about how "ackshually libs are the violent ones", left violence is extremely low, so A. the fact it happened freaked them out, and B. "don't you liberals know We're The Ones With The Guns" is load-bearing
to so many of them, in a similar manner, the realization of them being on the receiving end of the violence, not just being the ones directing and pointing it, was inconceivable; especially to be done by /generic people/ - doubly so that it could be primed by their own rhetoric calls for violence
