Read books in between doomscrolling.

Make stuff & then give it away.

Watch shit that makes you laugh.

Protect your neighbors.

Do things that make evil people sad.

Stay alive.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
It’s not the same thing, but you just made me remember how much excellent profanity I picked up from being dragged to picket lines as a kid. Excellent tradeoff in retrospect.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
It's not "There's no way a 13 yr old kid could be a criminal!" or "Well, how big was the knife he had?"

It's ICE STOLE A 13 YR OLD CHILD AND LIED ABOUT WHERE HE WAS. That's it. Nothing makes that ok.

Don't let them convince you it's ok to take "the bad ones."
roguesecunit.bsky.social
I have a lot of respect for Aaron so this is not a dunk on him specifically but I'm having a really hard time with everyone needing to fact-check DHS's statements about the "criminality" of the 13 yr old they stole from Everett, MA & sent to VA without telling anyone.

It's so fucking irrelevant.
reichlinmelnick.bsky.social
Direct confirmation that DHS’s version of the facts was not fully true. They were correct about the knife, wrong about the gun, and jury still out on the prior criminal history.
marisakabas.bsky.social
There had been reports that the boy had a gun on him, but Mayor DeMaria and the police chief said there was not a gun found on him.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
This feels similar in that it's making a legally allowed move that then enables a expressly forbidden move. I don't know of a legal term for this occuring within the United States, but the concept felt the same as chain refoulment. That's all I was getting at.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
My point in using that language is that there is a strong existing concept for int'l law that says hey, if we say you can't send person A to place X, you also can't send person A to place Y if they'll then get sent to place X. That's chain refoulment.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
You misread my tone. I'm a data analyst who did backend work for early ICE tracker data visualization tools; I'm profoundly aware that they move people, and that refoulment and chain refoulment are international concepts. (I also read the order, since I do that before talking about things.)
roguesecunit.bsky.social
You guys. The details of knife are not the point. Is there a minimum blade length at which it becomes acceptable to ship a 13 yr old out of state without informing their parents OR THE JUDGE WHO RULED ON THEIR CASE THE NEXT DAY?

There is nothing this kid could have had or done that justified this.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
Is that not essentially domestic chain refoulment? Or domestic chain...foulment, I guess? I mean, it's some bullshit is what it is, but it's so very much that other thing too.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
Also, that's like the second time this week I've said "nascent". The fuck is that about? Imma lay off the theory and reread Murderbot.
roguesecunit.bsky.social
I worry about this as the fragile, nascent regime moves into more cities. In theory, solidarity is like breathing. In practice, you can only hold so much outrage (and provide so much mutual aid) for places that are far away, esp. if your own home is under attack. We need a way to honor each other.
rswirling.bsky.social
Once again: this is also happening in DC. Still.

It feels like we’ve been forgotten, maybe because there aren’t huge confrontations to run photos of. But our neighbors are still being taken every day. Routine traffic stops are now done by 12+ feds alongside local police.

Please talk about us too.

I know y’all mean well, but think about the signaling when you talk about Black folks and then say “instead they get … ordinary people.”
sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com
instead they get grandmas, and priests, and inflatable frogs, and ordinary decent people rising up and saying "this is vile, this is unamerican, these are secret police"

they get kristi noem in a staring contest with a guy in a chicken suit

Absolute shitshow. Kid was detained by “school resource officer” (school cop) then handed to Everett PD who apparently called mom to come get him but ICE got him first even tho there’s no record of how.

Whether or not he was carrying weapons is both irrelevant & illegal to disclose to the public.

As someone who was charged with menacing with a deadly weapon a week before her 13th birthday, I would like to send a hearty fuck you to anyone who thinks a child can be a hardened criminal.

Also juvenile records are supposed to be confidential.

Also Tricia McLaughlin lies all the time.

This is the response I received from ICE when I inquired about the 13-year-old they abducted from Everett, Mass. on Friday:
Good afternoon, Marisa.
Please see the below from DHS on the 13-year-old alien.
Please feel free to direct any questions to them.
Respectfully,
James

Here are the facts: he posed a public safety threat with an extensive rap sheet including violent assault with a dangerous weapon, battery, breaking and entering, destruction of property.
He was in possession of a firearm and 5-7 inch knife when arrested.

My kid didn’t have the language to talk about their gender when this episode first aired, so I watched it with the general “fuck yeah, ally” feeling of someone who’s only had adult trans ppl in their life.

My kid gained language. Hits real different looking at it now.

FWIW, the Boston Globe couldn't get any more than you did; the "post with details" that they reference is...McLaughlin's quote-tweet reply to Aaron.

"Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security, released the details in a post on the social media site X Monday."

This is a far more constructive way to say this than what I usually say. Reposting so I can find it on days when I want to be constructive.

"Community" is a word that's often used to obscure divides. If you don't actually know vulnerable people in your community, your mental version of what your neighborhood is experiencing is likely centered on very different things than theirs. If you want to help, don't invent tactics from scratch.

I still can't believe that ICE's response to your request for info was to send you a screenshot of a deranged DHS quote tweet of @reichlinmelnick.bsky.social's post asking for info. Who the fuck even ARE these people. My teenagers communicate better than this on a bad day.

This country lowered flags for someone who wanted to narrow the definition of an acceptable person.

Only a tiny fraction will even know we just lost someone who took a fucking hammer to it & then passed that hammer on.

They moved this 13 yr old to Virginia w/o telling his parents (so they couldn't file habeus) OR the Mass judge who ruled on his case the next morning *believing he was still in Massachusetts*. Could his "record", behavior, or personal belongings make that any more legally acceptable? (real question)
roguesecunit.bsky.social
FWIW I get stopped almost exclusively by Boomer/grandparent-lookin folks asking where they can get one of my “Protect Trans Kids” shirts just about every time I wear it.

The haters are doing themselves no favors with real people by trying to speedrun this shit.

It’s impossible to overstate how much “abolish ice” is the normie position now here in chicago — just countless random moms at toddler soccer on a park district field asking me where I bought my anti-ice t-shirt. average people don’t like our neighborhoods being terrorized.

A friend ran the Chicago marathon today and said he couldn’t count the number of FUCK ICE signs along the way.
