not really apropos of anything but when I was a grocery checker as a wazzu student, an older woman came thru my line buying those little containers of colored candied citrus peel, & we discovered she was making julekake for the holidays, which i hadn't had in a couple years & dearly missed

my line of thinking is about what we're contributing to the fabric of community as much as what we're getting out of it. trading social niceties can (speaking from experience!) help retail workers feel human/get thru their day, & yeah, friendships have been made that way!

if i continue the metaphor I think the ballpark/bookstore are dessert haha. I've been thinking a lot lately about the inconvenience-community trade-off, and I feel that if we don't got each other at our grocery store, we don't truly got each other at the ballpark either

#lrt my shouldn't-be-a-hot take is that self-checkout is a bane on community-building. as a former checker, i promise you cannot check yourself out faster. a little harmless small talk with your neighbors as they ring up your groceries or whatever is good for you, like taking ur vitamins
