Wisdom from Tressie McMillan Cottom and Judith Butler. I am guilty of trying to convince others of how bad things are, but totally agree that focusing on connecting and creating is a better use of my time.
Link to article Tressie is referencing www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
tressiemcphd I talked about vicarious
transgressions and racialized emotions before the
election. Sharing on the grid because the latest from
Judith Butler brought it to mind.
Every day I make sure I keep two things in mind
when it comes to politics: one group's apocalypse is
another group's garden of Eden and it can always
get worse.
I bring this up because some of us are spending a lot
of time trying to convince others how bad it all is. I
find it much more humane to myself to remember
that some people are having a great time right now.
It saves me the trouble of proselytizing.
Maybe it's my part-heathen upbringing but I don't
feel compelled to convince revelers that they should
be depressed instead. It always seems better to
focus on the people who share my reality. I just don't
think much trumps the racialized dopamine thrill of
vicarious (safe) oppression except some kind of
trauma that I don't control and can't imagine.
But it's been true before and somehow we got here.I
try to focus on that.
I am also thinking a bit about the difference between
a constituency and an audience. Trump made one
more powerful than the other. And we are still very
confused by the differences. If we continue to be gripped with outrage
and stilled by stupefaction by each day's
new proclamation, we will fail to discern
what links them. To be gripped by his
statements is precisely the aim of their
utterance. We are in some ways in its
thrall when it captures and paralyzes us.
While there is every reason to be
outraged, we cannot let that outrage flood
us and stop our minds. For this is a
moment to grasp the fascist passions that
fuel this shameless grab for authoritarian
powers.
Those who celebrate his defiance and
sadism are as claimed by his logic as those
who are paralyzed with outrage. Perhaps
it is time to stand apart from these
passions to see how they work, but also to
find passions of our own: the desire for a
freedom equally shared; for an equality
that makes good on democratic promises;
to repair and regenerate the earth's living
processes; to accept and affirm the
complexity of our embodied lives; to
imagine a world in which government
supports health and education for all,
where we all live without fear, knowing
that our interconnected lives are equally
valuable.
Taking 54 and backroads for the win. Also parking in the neighborhood nearby and walking. Grabbing some dinner first!
I am taking my teen to the Billie Eilish concert at Lenovo tonight. I could not be more nervous about the traffic. Can't leave earlier than school getting out. I really hope we make it before the roads become parking lots.

Also WTF were they thinking scheduling these shows during the State Fair? It's SO dumb

Outrageous: Politicians in the North Carolina legislature are prioritizing rigging our voting maps instead of passing a budget that meets the needs of people in our state.

That is shameful!

Great thread of analysis of the NC Republican redistricting scam coming our way (by the author of Anatomy of a Purple State").
You may be wondering why the Republicans are being so explicit here. They're saying that they're doing this with the express purpose of getting another Rep seat.

The answer, I believe, is because they believe it may actually benefit them in the inevitable court fight.

For food recommendations he said Mamie's was the best he had in KY - delicious hot brown sandwiches
If you are looking for recommendations, my husband liked: Angel's Envy (very informative technical tour), Jeptha Creed (women owned), Castle and Key (pretty ground with nice tour & tasting), Four Roses, Peerless, Buffalo Trace, Pursuit United, and Willett

I know it’s only the 1st period of the 2nd game of the season so it may sound like an overreaction but:

FIRE THE POWERPLAY COACH

How many years are we gonna run it back?!

We had THREE and couldn’t score on ANY of them. Flyers scored within ~10 seconds of being on the PP. Insanity.
Canes Powerplay is the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. It’s been 6 years of this shit falling apart!!!!!!! 🫠 #RaiseUp
