What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

Indexes in books are written by actual humans and cannot be done automatically by computers
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

More than half the CO₂ emissions of the Industrial Age have been pumped into the atmosphere since 1990.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Literally nothing is 'carbon neutral'. It is a physical impossibility. If someone's telling you their product has zero climate impact, they're actively deciding to lie to you.
This Chicagoan sees you.

And the folks in Los Angeles

And Portland
Once again: this is also happening in DC. Still.

It feels like we’ve been forgotten, maybe because there aren’t huge confrontations to run photos of. But our neighbors are still being taken every day. Routine traffic stops are now done by 12+ feds alongside local police.

Please talk about us too.

I like the average life expectancy limit for several reasons.

The main one is that it's just as arbitrary as the minimum age limit and also voting age etc.
I think the rule should be that once you pass the age for average life expectancy, you can no longer be POTUS.
Yep

My very normie building neighbors were all talking about the No Kings this Saturday

This AM I happened to catch about 90 seconds of secondhand WBBM NewsRadio 78 and they reported the story about Judge Ellis evaluating whether the govt is heeding her TRO.

The story was pretty straight and, I gotta say, I think the Trump Admin may be in some trouble with the general public

You know one of the things I like about @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is that his whole energy is the guy that really wants you to hire him and is in fact perfect for the job but refuses to take it for granted that you will hire him. That balance of leadership and service is tough to pull off.

30 people from one neighborhood in one day
And still the most awkward angry thing you can imagine
See, I figure that sort of stuff is probably stored as actual physical files that haven’t been digitized and so they have no clue that they even exist
Right?

I don’t want an “accountable” ICE staffed with all the same shitheads

I want it dismantled entirely
It’s remarkable how eager people are to shove their feet into shoes that they claim don’t fit

Just a suggestion that folks refrain from ableism and ageism when discussing Mitch McConnell.

Being old and falling down doesn't make him a trash person, but all the actual trash things he has done and facilitated definitely do.

ICE's military raids and masked kidnappings are resonating deeply/negatively in the cultural spaces we keep hearing Dems need to reach: Manosphere, Joe Rogan, country music, disengaged voters. That's rare and it gives Dems a big opening to engage.

Thoughts on this:

Opposition to ICE violence is consistent with studies conducted over the years: people opposing immigration still oppose very violent enforcement. They oppose violent enforcement even when it’s necessary to force migrants to leave. See our studies here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1...
Yup

We don’t use our tv because it’s an ancient piece of shit but we’re well acquainted with a bunch of streaming platforms
They seem to be invigorated by spite and cruelty, don’t they?

But it’s probably that they don’t suffer from the stress that comes from caring about this broken world
In Chicago they’re probably parking them at the Naval Base

It’s been said but it bears repeating: in addition to the people being abducted, all Chicagoans are being psychologically terrorized. Seeing feds driving/walking around and videos of violent attacks in places you know and love will fuck you up. Get ready, it’s coming to all of America soon.
Apple does have the option of voice control but it rests heavily on knowing what the command phrases are

You can’t just speak normally to it
Having the option is definitely important

No. My fear (warranted, I think) is that Dems think they will get power back and return to "normal deportations." I mean, the people working now were largely worked a year ago!

If you were Black or brown in the 2010s, even under democrats, ICE never cared about respecting due process for their victims. I'm disgusted by liberals who think their team deporting immigrants was good. Let me tell you, just from my experiences alone that was debunked over time. They don't care.

Apparently there's a bunch of new people here, could be a rumor. At any rate: I wrote a book about Americans' centuries-long struggle over the proper place of slavery in George Washington's legacy, and how we've long used that history in fights about the present. It comes out in April!
My book exploring how generations of Americans have fought over how to understand George Washington and slavery officially has a pre-order page up! a.co/d/j5sBjLH
Thy Will Be Done: George Washington’s legacy of slavery and the fight for American memory by John Garrison Marks. Portrait of George Washington with shredded historical document nailed over top.
