I’m Ryan, an earth science educator & curriculum developer at two colleges in Central California. I’ve had a hand in some cool virtual field experience innovations, but lately I’m the “Volcano Tissue Box Guy”. I’m pinning my Etsy store link here for when I release batches.

Me, a white guy standing on Johnston Ridge in front of Mount Saint Helens on a partly cloudy day. The mountain is visible with lots of green growth on the landslide zone in the mid ground. I’m leaning on a stone wall with my butt holding a black tissue box cover holder that also looks like Mount Saint Helens. Screenshot of science Fridays website that hosts my virtual field trip to columns of the Giants and Central California. It says science Friday in the top left-hand corner underneath which is a picture of the tallest pile at the columns of the Giants full of brown and black, the salt boulders with a few pine trees in the distance There is a hexagon with a light bulb as a page brake with a title underneath that says embark on a 360° geologic expedition.

Happy National Fossil Day!
Take a look at @xenolith.bsky.social big piece of fossilized crap from the Cloverly Formation in Montana found many decades ago on a dig with Jack Horner. It's one of her prized possessions, and I made a 3D scan of it several years ago. Take it for a spin! ⚒️

This is a series of 4 photos. The 1st photo shows the excavation of a large fossil. There is a net over the fossil showing a grid pattern. The 2nd image shows heavy equipment in a construction area. The 3rd image is of 2 people digging around a large fossil. The final image shows heavy equipment lifting the fossil out of the ground.

I hope I don't have to QT myself in June saying "I can't believe that October storm was the biggest of the year!"
phaneritic.bsky.social
Quite a nice start to the water year in Turlock! After yesterday's storms I've recorded 1.64" since October 1st. The 1991-2020 average for this date is 0.20". Looks to be drier the next week+, but we'll take it when we can.
Line graph showing rain total in inches on the y axis and every date of the year on the X axis starting with October 1 on the origin and ending on Sept 30 on the right. The thin grey dashed line represents climatic average rainfall accumulation based on 1991-2020 averages from official TID Station 2 data. There is a blue line representing my station's wettest year that ended with 22.14" of rain due to a very wet december and february. The brown line at the bottom was my station's driest year in 2013-14 with only 5.06" of rain total.

UPDATE: Following the firing of the director of the student newspaper, Indiana University has now cut the print edition of the newspaper entirely.

Indiana University cuts IDS print entirely, hours after firing student media director
By IDS staff
Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm · Updated Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our newspaper. Upon pushback, the university fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision.

Media School Dean David Tolchinsky sent the order to IDS leadership in an email responding to its appeal that the school not censor the newspaper. And the dean attributed the decision to “the campus.” He has not yet responded to a message for clarification.

Just found this person told management that if they were thinking of firing someone early career to fire them instead.

This kind of amazing selflessness is who we are losing. It is maddening.

Just heard about a 30-yr JPL scientist that was laid off. Had an email from them about one of our projects at 1PM. Three hours later: fired.

Again, if JPL leadership were actively trying to destroy morale, would they be handling the layoffs any differently?

Air overhead is record cold. Weather balloon from Oakland found the temps about three miles up are coldest ever measured for this date on record, second coldest for any date in October. forecast.weather.gov/product.php?... #CAwx
forecast.weather.gov
The 12Z sounding found very cold air aloft. The 850 temp was 2.35C and 500 temp -25.35C. Both near the minimum daily values. Most notable was the 500 mb height of 5460m. That shattered the daily record. For context the average for this date is 5787, 10th percentile: 5667, old record: 5572. In fact, 5460 is tied for the second lowest 500 mb height ever measured in the month of October, beaten only by 5457m measured on 10/28/56. While this cold air is keeping lapse rates steep, the moisture has plummeted and the surface

Major snow accumulations atop Glacier Point in Yosemite and still going this morning. Can’t imagine the logistical chaos during a shutdown where they’re trying to stay open.

Screenshot of my WebCam view from a top glacier point where you can see about 20 big pine trees in the foreground covered with snow with what looks to be about 2 feet of snow piled up on bushes in front of the camera. There is not much background, View because everything is in clouds and snowing heavily.
