I’m going to make an AI app where a user pays $1 and gets back $2 and an emoji “chosen” for them. Better profit margin than OpenAI, based on above calculations.

Still want to make cleaning biodiversity data shrimp-ler? 🦐

Good news: We just updated our Cleaning Biodiversity Data in R book, so you still can! We've updated data for 2025, added new content & fixed lots of silly typos 😀

NZ's govt has announced reforms to science funding

just one line about basic science in there: "Discovery-led science & research will continue to be funded. This will sit outside the pillars & is essential for maintaining vibrant curiosity-driven science system"

yea mate seems like a real priority
A new strategy for the science system | Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment
The Government is changing how science, innovation and technology are funded and supported in New Zealand. The goal is a simpler and more strategic system that helps researchers turn ideas into solutions that benefit New Zealand.

This is also a long known problems in entomological collections - collectors do not want the common species, they accumulate the rare species ....

Large citizen science datasets are powerful tools for biodiversity science, but they may have biases. Nice new paper from @louisbackstrom.bsky.social et al. showing that for eBird and Birdtrack lists there is a tendency for rare species to be over-represented

Sweet pdoc fellowship! Would be really excited to work with someone interested in applying ancestral recombination graphs to messy, real-world data in plant genomes. Happy to chat if you might be interested!

Spookiest decoration at the "Zoo Goes Boo" event at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids? Giant model of parasitoid wasps hatching from cocoons affixed to their caterpillar host.
Large model of a green caterpillar, the back of which is covered by dozens of white cocoons. Wasps can be seen emerging from some of the cocoons.

Confirmation & details about RIFs at DOE, per agency source:

Federal employees working in renewable energy offices (solar, wind, and hydrogen fuel cell) received a 'general' notice of possible RIF at a meeting this afternoon. If identified individually, DOE employees will be sent specific RIFs.
