More a jazz and easy listening Liberal than a classical Liberal. Cricket (Northants fan), literature, economics, politics & anything that takes my fancy.

This is a lovely thread by my very dear friend about my uncle who died yesterday. The ‘teaching an actor what Eastenders is before he got a part in it’ anecdote is a very cherished memory.

This is very sad news. I think Tony’s appearance as Ensor in Blake’s 7 was the first time I became aware of him, and then a few years later he was really excellent as one of the main characters in the first series of Geoff McQueen’s Big Deal.

Just remembered that Monica Jones didn’t read the New Statesman because she didn’t read ‘sedition’.

The conversation on ID cards was so interesting and informative that I listened to it on the way to the cheesemonger and again on the way back.

Labour want to bring in digital I.D. and many people do NOT like it. Are they right? Are they wrong? And what is the “Lethal Trifecta” that makes the plan so risky? @hannahfearn.bsky.social, @jonnelledge.bsky.social, @hern.bsky.social and @mattgreencomedy.com discuss 👉 linktr.ee/ohgodwhatnow...

You can’t be an effective party for successful people in midlife (sort of the *point* of the Tory party ultimately) if you are at odds with them over the most consequential thing you did in office. This week’s column:
How Brexit drained the Tories’ talent pool
The party can’t keep expecting successful people to pretend that leaving the EU was a good idea

System 2 thinking- writing a letter. System 1- splurging your inchoate thoughts online.

Wishing you all the best, and hope that not only do you fully recover, but also get a good substack out of it. Your NHS thoughts after your first admission were very helpful, to me anyway. Not sure if Wes Streeting is a subscriber.

What’s the solution? Webchat and internal emails only?

I miss the days when if you wanted to comment on a newspaper article, you had to write it down, get an envelope and put a stamp on it.

It’s very good, as ever. I’m intrigued, though, by the reader’s comments. You’d expect FT readers to have a less ‘lizard brain’ response than with other newspapers. But they don’t, really. Another example of why we’re not doing well as a society.

I’m more fascinated by the insane replies to his tweet. (And yes, we’re not capable of dealing with a load of false positives.)

Ah, me too, Simon. Hope the pension issue is resolved soon. (Assuming it’s the state pension.)

A sad read, really. Chimes with some of what @thegrumbler.bsky.social says In his newsletter. I’m still going to buy a season ticket (no membership at Northants either) but I live near the ground. If I move further away, would I just buy the odd ticket? Perhaps.
