This is a lovely thread by my very dear friend about my uncle who died yesterday. The ‘teaching an actor what Eastenders is before he got a part in it’ anecdote is a very cherished memory.

This is very sad news. I think Tony’s appearance as Ensor in Blake’s 7 was the first time I became aware of him, and then a few years later he was really excellent as one of the main characters in the first series of Geoff McQueen’s Big Deal.

I would say the pinch hitter has gone out fashion in cricket for the very reason you have articulated, Soph. Back in the early 90s the Sri Lankans pioneered the pinch hitter as opener (e.g. Kaluwitharana). Nowadays all openers tend to be aggressive, as do at least four of the top seven.

Well, you should be. Last night they led by 277 with two wickets left. Now they lead by 248 with no Surrey wickets taken. It’s more in the balance now, but still a good chance for immortal glory. To lose now, though, would be devastating, from where they were. Fun.
