One of the reasons things are so dysfunctional in California is because of Prop 13 passed by voters in 1978:

Check out the property tax bills of these three neighbors:
1. $1,230.26
2. $63,947.68 - not a typo
3. $2,194.44

“The Defense Department has confiscated the badges of the Pentagon reporters from virtually every major media organization in America,” the Pentagon Press Association said

Oct. 15, 2025
PENTAGON PRESS ASSOCIATION
STATEMENT
Today, the Defense Department confiscated the badges of the Pentagon reporters from virtually every major media organization in America. It did this because reporters would not sign onto a new media policy over its implicit threat of criminalizing national security reporting and exposing those who sign it to potential prosecution.
The Pentagon Press Association's members are still committed to reporting on the U.S. military. But make no mistake, today, Oct. 15, 2025 is a dark day for press freedom that raises concerns about a weakening U.S. commitment to transparency in governance, to public accountability at the Pentagon and to free speech for all.

Fascinating new paper: higher levels of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater correlate with higher health-related absences from work.

"COVID-19 may have created a new year-round baseline for work absences that is similar to influenza season conditions before the pandemic," the authors write.
Enduring Outcomes of COVID-19 Work Absences on the US Labor Market
This cohort study examines the extent to which COVID-19 continues to generate work absences and decrease labor force participation beyond the pandemic period in the US.

It’s funny to see Olivia Reingold complain about her ex-friend who comes from “media royalty” when she herself is media royalty. Dad was NBC Asia top brass and then bought six local CBS stations. She’s a Columbia legacy, and Michael Barbaro interviewed her for a WaPo puff piece when she was 10.
By Michael Barbaro
Celia and Olivia Reingold, owners of a District-based toy company, registered for the world's biggest toy show this year, convinced they would make strong connections across the industry. With more than 80 products, their company, they reasoned, was ready to play ball with the toy business's biggest players.
The toy fair's organizers didn't see it that way.
It turns out Celia, 13, and Olivia, 10, are too young to attend. Citing a longstanding policy, organizers of American International Toy Fair said it does not allow anyone under 18 to enter the conference, which ended yesterday in New York.
The girls said they are baffled by the policy.
"I don't think it's very fair," Olivia said in an interview yesterday. "We are managing our own business."

Republicans lose cities by massive margins and their response is to defund the cities

Democrats lose rural areas by massive margins and their response is to increase rural funding
sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com
by my count there are four vague proposals offered: national service, investing in rural communities, reform the supreme court, repeal citizens' united via constitutional amendment

one of these is profoundly important. the other three are memes.

Fun fact: In 2018 polling found that it still has a 65% approval rating - the same as in 1978!

Meanwhile, 40 years later, people can't remember why California public schools generally don't have school bus services

"King Newsome is letting the peasants vote on taxes!?"

Yes that's right Sean. California voters. Famously never allowed to vote on taxes because of Newsome. Yep. That's definitely how things work.

It looks like that place (Trestle) has 5 units available for rent, out of 200 units.

Or, in long time resident speak: it's completely VACANT
nextdoorsv.bsky.social
I think when I first posted this on the nazi hellsite, someone said these were originally intended to be 1 story taller, but then residents complained and the developer quickly backed off

WRONG. Everyone knows that Paris is a place for tourists. No real people live there. Would you live in Disneyland? Of course not.
