Janene Hendrickson made this exceptional quilt from the "Coral Reef" pattern by Judy Neimeyer.
Janene says (if you believe her) that this is her second attempt at paper piecing. 😳 She selected the colors to coordinate with a picture she has in her bedroom.
I am, in awe.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

Beautiful mushrooms popping up after all the rain. 🍄‍🟫🍄

#autumn #mushrooms #fungi #photography #nature #fall #October
a cone shaped mushroom coming up through the pine straw. It has ombre colors shading from bright orange at the edges to very red at the center peak of the cone. a couple of dark red leaves lie on the old brown leaf mould nearby. two bright yellow puff mushrooms popped up near some dark grey rocks & leaves a tiny mushroom the size of my fingernail near a fallen twig. it has a flat disc on a white stalk, with the disc shading from peach to dark orange in the center some bright yellow disc mushrooms push through leaves on the forest floor

This fall I have enjoyed many golden moments with northern wildlife. #birds #mammals
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Northern FLicker, Red Fox, Ring-necked Ducks
A yellow-rumped warbler perches on a wild rose plant with a golden backdrop of fall colours. A northern flicker perches on a wolf willow plant with a golden backdrop of fall colours. A red fox stands amid grasses with a golden backdrop of fall colours. A small flock of ring-necked ducks swim on a calm wetland that reflects golden leaves.

Hey look, Israel broke the cease-fire, twice, in two different ways, within 24 hours - again.
mondoweiss.net
NEW: Israel informed the UN it will permit only 300 aid trucks into Gaza daily, not the 600 mandated by the ceasefire it just signed.

Today's word of the day is terrorism. Let's all familiarize ourselves with the definition.
Terrorism: the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

where does the sky start?
in the limitless blue-grey of your eyes
sparkling creativity & mischief
in the sigh of my lungs
life-breath, love-breath,
catching in my throat with delight shared
in the touch of the breeze
in the scent of the sea
the sky stretches from us to the stars.

where does the sky start—
at the lip of the hill,
or in the breath that leaves us
when that vast hush melts like mercury?
a child might cup the spill in her palms,
an old woman to memory,
both reaching for the same
blue uncertainty.

Regulations are written in blood:
"Before 1994, manufacturers had to prove herbal products were safe before selling them. That changed after Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act. The law sharply limited the FDA’s authority, leaving supplements far less regulated than drugs."

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Animals need cobalt for our metabolism; we get it as vitamin B12. So, for #printerSolstice2425 prompt cobalt I made a #linocut of English chemist & x-ray crystallographer Dorothy Mary Crowfoot Hodgkin (née Crowfoot, 1910-1994), 🧪👩🏼‍🔬🐡 #histsci who won the Nobel Prize in #chemistry for her models of 🧵
My Lino block portrait progress is mostly carved and shows a young Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin in cobalt blue from chest up in a blouse tied with a bow. Her ball-and-stick molecular model for penicillin appears over her shoulder (with atoms in red, pink, pale blue, dark blue and black) and her blouse has a specific repeating pattern of circles and nested broken circles like a labyrinth on bronze circles within a hexagonal while area on a pink background. Overlapping her hair is her model of vitamin B12 complete with electron density contour lines and 3 Angstrom scale bar from one of her papers.

Happy birthday to #physicist Harriet Brooks (1876 - 1933) who discovered atomic recoil, Radon & recognized radioactive elements could undergo chains of transmutations into a series of new elements. 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🎢 #histsci

She was Rutherford’s 1st grad student at McGill. After publishing her results in 1899
My 9.25" x 12.5" linocut portrait of physicist Harriet Brooks (1876 - 1933) in a gradient of turquoise to green, shows her and her discovery of atomic recoil in gold (Radon gives off an alpha particle and daughter nucleus goes in opposite direction). A series of diagrams at the bottom shows how the Rutherford research group understood chains of radioactive active transmutations at the time.

Happy Ada Lovelace Day to all who celebrate!

This year I choose to remember one of the first recognized female astronomers, Elisabeth Hevelius. (1647-1693). This published Polish woman began her systematic study of the stars with her husband, but continued & published after his death.
