After nearly 20 months in Israeli captivity, photojournalist Shadi Abu Sido,one of the thousands freed in Monday’s prisoner release, has spoken out on his treatment.“For two years I was starved. I went in starving and came out starving. They told us, ‘We killed your children. Gaza is gone.’”Looking around at the destruction, Abu Sido further expressed his shock at what he had come home to. “I entered Gaza and found it to be like a scene from judgement day. This is not Gaza.”Working as a cameraman, Abu Sido was arrested in March 2024 when Israeli forces raided Gaza City’s al-Shifa hospital and accused him of being an ‘unlawful combatant.’ Journalists from Gaza are often held under Israel’s Incarceration of Unlawful Combatants Law, which allows long detention without charge and limited legal access.
