Fire is great. We couldn't have built civilization without it.

Capitalism is great. We couldn't have built civilization without it.

but free market capitalism isn't the solution to everything, just like we don't light everything on fire just because it burns.

Night 15 of #31NightsOfHalloween :
The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) directed by Wes Craven and starring Bill Pullman, Cathy Tyson, and Zakes Mokae. There aren't a lot of horror movies as metaphor for toppling dictatorships but I am here for it.

I don't know if all the experiments paid off financially for Diz (with streaming? who can say?) but I liked that they were taking chances, and also proving you can tell sci-fi stories even on TV budgets.

The other Marvel shows have been really good too (She-Hulk for me didn't land but I liked the effort). Tho again, we kinda have to ignore the constant chorus of the online fan base that looks at the Marvel TV stuff and says, "Ew this has girls in it"
mdotblind.bsky.social
I like Ahsoka even with the flaws; opinions differ. (& Skeleton Crew + Acolyte - each has fans.) And that's ignoring the near constant chorus of the online fan base that hates _everything_ new. Objectively, they ain't bad but if you say they ain't your cup of Star Wars, I'll see your point.

I'll probably enjoy Vision Quest when it comes out, and it'll be a fun excuse to rewatch Wanda & Agatha right before.

On the Star Wars side, the Diz+ TV shows are maybe more mixed? Mando is a fav (nearly everyone liked the 1st season) but Boba needed more Boba and less Mando in it.

I've been liking the smaller-scale stories Disney has been telling in their Marvel and Star Wars universes — in this case, the Wanda/Agatha/Vision weirdly cohesive cobbled-together mess variety.com/2025/tv/news..., though most of the Diz+ stuff also fits a "smaller-scale" description

Trump’s power depends on maintaining the illusion that he’s all-powerful, and that Americans adore him.

But that illusion is harder to maintain if millions of people are in the streets protesting.

This is why Republicans are trying to discredit No Kings Day rallies before they've even happened.

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

I'd love to see hopeful, solarpunk optimistic YA. "Yeah, our grandparents back in the evil 2030s broke everything, but me and my quirky friends are helping to rebuild something new"

Tom Swift is owned IP but a young-inventor-type in that mould just might work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Swift

We can't re-write that, and the kids might not want it.

But what about kids on a space station, or a generation ship? Kids-on-bikes on Mars. The isolation and desperation of growing up in the 2020s post-covid suburbs but seen through the lens of growing up in a dome on a planet we're terraforming

and not that there's no YA Sci-fi — tho what we have now is, um. (more dystopian?) a reflection of the current times.

What we miss is that optimistic, build-a-spaceship in your back yard, everybody is going to orbit, a boy and his laser rifle, somewhat specifically 50s-flavored juvenile sci-fi.

Not putting Scalzi on blast— because yeah, I agree with him, you can follow that discussion here bit.ly/47r56y7 — but a screenshot so I can take off from there with my own point:

there's probably a bit of latent untapped demand here.

Not that the YA market is hurting (far from it)

This is why I get so exasperated when people suggest SF written 50+ years ago as the place for new readers of the genre, especially young readers, to start with. There is SO MUCH that will throw them out of the work, from outdated tech to outdated social structures. They'll leave and not come back.

Yup was just gonna comment on this! My kids always notice how outdated computers or other technology seem when I make them rewatch e.g. original Star Wars trilogy rr something
