#Frankenstein is the ultimate culmination of @realgdt.bsky.social's filmography. With such a storied career, it feels ridiculous to say that this is his magnum opus and yet it is an apt description of what was achieved here. His love of monsters has never been more palpable than it is here.

#Bugonia is definitely the film I wanted to see out of Lanthimos after my disappointment with Kinds of Kindness and the perfection of Poor Things. It's not breaking new ground but it's really excellent in what it's doing and is carried by top notch acting and directing. The ending is a trip.

Lanthimos is known for his dark comedy and boy is this dark and is it comedic. Several scenes had my theater laughing uncomfortably with really well executed gags via framing and blocking. And when it gets dark, it gets *dark*. Was kind of caught off guard by the level of violence shown here.

The script and more importantly the directing feel like growth for Lanthimos. The characters feel more human than they ever have save for The Favourite. They don't have that weird alien cadence to their speech that he's known for. When Plemons comes off as weird, it's because he's a freak in context

This film is a trip man. It delves deep into the psychology of a conspiracy nut and his insanity contrasted with this corporate liberal that hides behind the facade of said liberalism to avoid responsibility. Two extremes ends of fringe morality that come into conflict in a really compelling way.

With Kinds of Kindness, Jesse Plemons proved he could embody the incredibly bizzare Lanthimos characters and here he stands tall as the most compelling and fascinating part of the film. Emma Stone also delivers an incredibly low key performance with incredible monologues and skill.

#Bugonia feels like the best mix of early and later Yorgos Lanthimos in all its weirdness while at the same time feeling like the most(ly) grounded film he's ever made. It feels like a Kinds of Kindness short extended into a feature film but with a much better script. This is Yorgos at top game.

#Frankenstein is among @realgdt.bsky.social's absolute best. Pan's Labyrinth holds a very special, very personal place in my heart. But this is the film he was born to make. It is a work of art with a touch that no AI could ever replicate. It's funny, tragic, violent, but most of all, human.

With his touch, @realgdt.bsky.social's meditation of man vs beast has never felt more emotional. For every moment of grusome violence, there is also a moment of kindness and warmth. A moment where he peels the mask off and reveals a gentle creature. The balance has never been struck this perfectly.
