OK, this IS much better than we usually see. But Johnson BEGINS with the absurd claim that they're waiting on Schumer "to let us turn the lights back on" so they can go into "legislative session."
The correct intervention is: "What do you mean? Chuck Schumer doesn't control the House. You do!"
KARL: I mean, you could swear in Adelita Grijalva tomorrow, right?

MIKE JOHNSON: No, not tomorrow. We couldn't. We wouldn't.

Like this is just dumb. The only constant in these takes is that Dems can do nothing right and Trump can do nothing wrong.
I agree with a few lines from the article: the Dems should certainly work to rehabilitate the image of the Democratic Party, alongside attacked Trump and Trump acolytes. And it should be much more forceful.

Lead front-page story in today's NYT

Time-travel dept:

-I don't remember front-page NYT stories "It's 1993, and GOP Is Still Running Against Clinton." That's what they did, for huge mid-term win.

-Nor "It's 2009, and GOP Is Still Running Against Obama." Which they did, for huge win.

Weird.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been a much bigger effort by the Democrats to be univocal in blaming the government shut down on the Republicans: when you have a crisis, use it.
And it has to extend outside of social media posts, press conferences, and a handful of interviews.
Need to watch the NYC mayoral debate -

And a majority Latine district in Arizona continues on without representation
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has issued a stark warning to U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson: Seat Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, or face a lawsuit. Johnson has thus far refused to seat Grijalva, who won a special election more than three weeks ago.
Arizona AG Threatens Speaker Johnson With Lawsuit for Not Swearing In Grijalva
“If I have to, I’ll take him to court,” Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a CNN interview.

As a baby lawyer in the Reagan White House, John Roberts was writing memos arguing that violations of the Voting Rights Act should not be "too easy to prove." This is not just any legal issue that happens to come before him. This is his life's work. He just wants to finish what he started.

What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Seems like the best solution would be to enact a similar bill in Maryland and Virginia, or in those states localities. Problems of scale require bare minimum cooperation between local governments (most of whom seem unwilling or unable to participate in cost-incentive programs)

An hour and 11-minute long mix of nothing but D'Angelo live tracks from various shows during the Brown Sugar and Voodoo eras. It's so well done. Also downloadable.

D’Angelo. Hard to even process this one. He was one of a kind, but part of a continuum. That’s at the heart of what made him so special. #RIP
RIP to D’Angelo! One of the greatest artists of all time, and my favorite artist.

there is a lot here that stinks but the record shows that they were never arrested and the grand jury no-billed the charges. the one surviving claim is the most damning: a malicious prosecution suit against the supervising officer who fabricated evidence to get the claim to the grand jury.
6th Cir. holds that the harms to five black UK football players who were falsely accused of crimes after they were subjected to racist taunts by white frat boys at a school party do not constitute deprivations of liberty under the Fourteenth Amendment.

lol @ “a ruthless terrorist organization (Hamas)” when they’ve been the only one of these parties to advocate for human rights in Gaza, to propose practical technocratic governance, and to be completely open about intention
The ceasefire in Gaza, now in effect, depends on the promise given by an inveterate liar and conman (Trump) to a ruthless terrorist organization (Hamas) that he will prevent another serial liar, conman, and war criminal (Netanyahu) from resuming the war:
Trump promised not to let Israel break Gaza ceasefire to get deal
Israel broke one ceasefire. Trump told the mediators he wouldn't let it happen this time.
